Decision time for xenodata/@scope

We seem to be at a bit of an impasse, and we're releasing tomorrow. At this point we can: 1) release xenodata as-is, with @scope and the current value list. 2) release xenodata with @scope, but without a list of recommended values 3) release xenodata without @scope 4) back out xenodata and release without it My own preferences, in order, are 3, 2, 4, 1. I'm not convinced of the need for @scope, but I really think the value names have to be changed (and some removed) if we go with it. Thoughts? In addition, I do think we need to provide an example or two in the text of the Guidelines. I can come up with a non-XML one pretty easily.

If you search for the string "gloss" in http://teijenkins.hcmc.uvic.ca/job/TEIP5/lastSuccessfulBuild/artifact/P5/re… you will find that quite a few of our example <list>s that have type=gloss are not glossary lists at all. I'm not suggesting that we should try to fix this before release, but if I don't mention it now I'll forget. James -- BTW, this was discovered by Sarah Connell, who you met just a few hours ago. (She was the one in blue running the meeting.)

Decision time: exactly how and where will this release be released?

HI all, I've updated TCW20 (How to Edit the Guidelines) and I'm beginning work on TCW22 (Building a TEI Release). These instructions, along with a lot of our automated processes, assume that the release will be pushed up to SourceForge (therefore requiring that the release technician have shell access to the SF repo). To me this really makes no sense any more; I think we should make this release the point at which we move our products over to both GitHub (for releases from each individual repository) and tei-c.org (for a catalogue of all releases, past and present, in downloadable format). All in favour say aye, all against say why, please. Since we haven't yet established a procedure for doing a release under the new conditions, I don't propose to make it up and describe it ahead of time. I suggest we go through the process, led this time by those with the most familiarity with our past and present systems rather than by a novice release technician, and then construct the documentation after the event, when we know what we ended up doing and what worked. Again, anyone think this is wrong? For the moment, then, what I propose to do with TCW22 is to comment out any references to SF, update any references to svn to refer to git, and leave the document in an incomplete state which retains only the bits that still make sense. Hugh -- Are you still working on this? And it's in branch hcayless-appcrit, not branch appcrit, right? (Can we somehow sequester whichever one is *not* current? It's confusing.) I haven't looked through all the rules carefully (but hope to be able to do so tomorrow). But I did notice at least one problem. Everywhere you have not( parent::tei:note ) it should probably be not( ancestor::tei:note ) lest, e.g., the <lg> in the structure This is a dangling paragraph describing superficial sights. <note> An blatant reference to <title>The Dangling Conversation</title>, a Simon and Garfunkel song: <quote> <lg type="verse"> <l>In the dangling conversation</l> <l>And the superficial sighs</l> <l>The borders of our lives</l> </lg> </quote> </note> be flagged by "abstractModel-structure-l" as violating the abstract model. Overall, the current piecemeal approach is problematic, I think. My instinct is we would do better to have all of these <constraint>s in the same place, both in the source (e.g., all in the app.xml file) and in the execution (e.g., all rules have a context of tei:app). If you haven't, you should read the xenoData tagdoc source= attribute suggested values and perhaps examples before I merge xenoData into master tomorrow a.m. for the freeze. Who is taking care of @degree by tomorrow? I will be able to unless there are issues with <xenoData> that need to be tackled. I plan to do the language stuff tonight.

Merging

Realized we should probably discuss this a bit: when I merged the appcrit stuff, I did this: git checkout hcayless-appcrit git merge master # this resulted in a conflict, which I fixed, then ran a commit to complete the merge git checkout master git merge --squash hcayless-appcrit # this sets up a merge by pulling all the changes over from the branch and setting up a commit for them # this means that instead of getting all the commits from your branch, you just get one with the results. git commit -m "Merged Critical Apparatus changes into master." git push origin master I don’t really think it’s necessary to import my commit history from the branch, because it’s a) not very interesting and b) it’s still available until we’re done with the branch and delete it. But there’s room for disagreement. This method avoids hairy merges (you might have conflicts at any step and have to go through several rounds of conflict resolution) and results in a cleaner history, but it does mean we then don’t have the full record of how a feature was developed (except in the branch, which eventually will be deleted)…it’s a tossup. What do you all think?

Freeze on October 1

Dear All, A reminder that we will be entering a freeze and review period for the Guidelines and Stylesheets repositories on Thursday. Any substantial work for the next release must be pushed to GitHub before then. I will be integrating the new critical apparatus changes later this morning. Does anyone need help getting their work merged into master before Thursday? Please let me know! Incidentally, I’ve just pushed a change to the Stylesheets that I think will fix the goofy ODD validation error we’ve been seeing. Didn’t seem to break any tests.

I think the number and speed of responses on TEI-L suggests that the packages are used and useful, so we should continue to maintain them. The next question is how many of them and which of them; and how do we manage the transition to a new signing key and a new repository location? Appcrit and stylesheets

After our meeting yesterday, I went digging to see what would need to be done to support the new app. crit. features in the stylesheets, and found that actually the support probably isn’t really up-to-date even for the current phrase-level-only apparatus (e.g. no support for @source; no support for <rdgGrp>s). I’ve made a bunch of updates that support, e.g., lines inside <app> and transpositions, but then on further investigation found that even though the existing app-handling has a couple of tests, they’re never run during testing, and there are no "expected-results" artifacts, so we can’t know what they’re supposed to do or if any regressions have occurred. There’s rather a lot of work to be done to produce output I’d consider acceptable. Given that state of things, I don’t consider updating the stylesheets to be a blocker for getting the app. crit. updates into 2.9.0. I do plan to work on it, and I think I can promise it will be better even in the upcoming release, but there’s a bunch more work to be done. It’s not really surprising: I bet anyone who’s doing critical editions is developing their own custom displays anyway, so these have never gotten a real workout.

Hi all, I raised the issue of the Oxygen release with Alex on the relevant oxygen-tei ticket, and had a response from him (below). Basically, he has taken the current stable releases of P5 and the Stylesheets and built the framework for Oxygen 17.1 already. The rest of his message gives another instance of how cautious we have to be here: it looks like changes to Oxygen 17.1 have percolated into changes to the plugin/framework code, and that some of these may not be compatible with older versions of Oxygen. This means we'll have to do some testing before releasing our own updated version of the plugin, and will probably have to change our "minimum version" information (which is currently at 15.2) to a later version. I don't believe we should branch the code; I don't want to be in the business of trying to maintain multiple versions of our TEI plugin for different versions of Oxygen. I believe this is the situation: - Most TEI+Oxygen users have a version of Oxygen with the standard framework and just use that. They'll see no change; if they update Oxygen they'll get the latest stable framework, and if they don't, they'll continue to have the one that was released with their Oxygen version. - A number of early-adopters with a specific reason to do so have installed the plugin to stay up to date with our releases. As active early-adopters, the majority of this group will presumably also be updating their Oxygen, so they'll have no problem. Where one of that group has an old version of Oxygen, they'll see that they're no longer able to update their version of the plugin (after our next release of it), but they can keep using the version they have until they update Oxygen, so they're no worse off; they just can't keep moving forward with us until they update Oxygen. Is everyone happy with this, or is there an appetite for forking the oxygen-tei project to support users of older versions of Oxygen? I've already integrated the current, stable version. On the branch I've created I also brought in the small changes that we've made to the TEI framework and Java sources in the current Oxygen development stream. One aspect that should be taken into account is that this framework might not be fully compatible with older versions of Oxygen. I'm expecting the TEI community to work with different versions of Oxygen so we should probably tag or branch the current project state. We'll see if we have time to integrate the release from October 8. If it doesn't make it perhaps we'll put it in a minor release afterwards.
