The schema currently makes available within <facsimile> : surface, surfaceGrp, and zone, but not line. Is that balance about right? Should I restore <line> (which is sugar for <zone type="line">) ? Should I remove <surfaceGrp>? The purpose is to support a Simple document which contains just images and the lightest of transcriptions, such as you might get from a crowd sourcing transcription experiment for example, not to do full blown genetic transcriptions, obvs.

Simple : @key or @ref

I am still toiling in this vineyard. Here's a new question for you to consider. The Simple schema makes available both @ref and @key on both <name> and <rs>. In the prose however only <rs key="arbitrarytoken"> is presented. This seems counter to our current dogma, which would prioritize <name ref="#pointer"> wherever possible, I believe. Since I've now added <particDesc> and hence <person> is available, it would seem better to rework some (or all?) the examples to use that mechanism, e.g. <name ref="#BENM2">Mrs Bennet</name> rather than <rs key="BENM2">

Krakow Council meeting at DH2016

Dear Council, Since many of us on Council are here in Krakow for the ADHO 2016 conference, at the June Council meeting I volunteered to try to organize us on site. The conference organizers were really helpful in promising to provide us a room as soon as we determined a time for tomorrow afternoon, but because we were all (me included) distracted by sessions and likely to be distracted by them again tomorrow, I think it’s surely too late now to try to organize a virtual meeting. I herewith give up on that, with apologies, but I hope that we Council members on site will at least get together during lunch (at 1pm here in Krakow). Elli has a lunch meeting and could only join at 2, and when we realized that, plus the attractiveness of the afternoon session, we felt as if we’d best just take in the conference tomorrow and not try to organize a hangout session. This is a tricky one, so please bear with me and read to the end before rolling eyes. In Simple, the only available global attribute for recording rendition is @rendition, which (you will recall) is intended to provide a pointer to a <rendition> element, either in the header or elsewhere. So (simplifying somewhat) you might do and somewhere in the header have <rendition xml:id="foo"></rendition> and expect "some CSS styling here" to be applied to your Since life is short and we don't really want to have to say that "foo" means "font-style:italic" in every single document we produce, (thus making it impossible to combine documents, because you will have multiple definitions for "foo" ) you can also use a private URI, like this and then in your header map the prefix "my" to some URL where the <rendition> element concerned is to be found inside a <listPrefixDef> containing something like: <prefixDef ident="my" matchPattern="([A-Z]+)" replacementPattern="http://www.example.com/myListOfStyles.xml#$1"/> So far so good, and that mechanism (which is also very useful eg to link from a <name> to a <person> in a personography) is well attested, reasonably well understood, kosher TEI. Unfortunately, Simple doesn't use it, despite appearances. What Simple does is to define a whole shed load of "suggested values" for @rendition using a valList in the ODD, which begins like this: <valList mode="add" type="semi"> <valItem ident="simple:allcaps"> <desc>all capitals</desc> </valItem> <valItem ident="simple:blackletter"> <desc>black letter or gothic typeface</desc> </valItem> <valItem ident="simple:bold"> <desc>bold typeface</desc> </valItem> <valItem ident="simple:bottombraced"> <desc>marked with a brace under the bottom of the text</desc> </valItem> <valItem ident="simple:boxed"> <desc>border around the text</desc> </valItem> So it *looks* like we are defining a whole shed load of private URIs, hoorah. But nowhere is there a <prefixDef> that tells me what the "simple" prefix means i.e. how to map eg "simple:blackletter" to the appropriate CSS! Nor indeed is it clear where such a beast would reside. Maybe one day the TEI will provide a server from which recognised CSS mappings for these private URIs could be recovered, but I am not holding my breath. So, despite appearances, we have to conclude that these things are not really private URIs at all, but rather MAGIC CODES. In which case, really they ought to be being supplied on a @rend attribute... It gets worse. The current schema includes a schematron constraint which says that the value of @rendition MUST be either a local pointer starting with '#' or a magic code starting "simple:". So I cannot define my own prefixes either. All I can do is provide the missing <prefixDef>s myself, which seems a bit hard on the Simple user. At the moment the documentation is tactfully silent around this issue, or was until I introduced a brief explanation of how prefixDef works. Should I now expand this to spell out that users of Simple are expected to provide their own mappings for such of the proposed @rendition values as they choose to use? Or that Simple just provides these things like that, go figure ? And where should they put their mappings? In the header of the document? But then they might as well be defined locally using xml:id and a regular # pointer (especially since you can't put a colon inside an xml:id value). In some other document we're not going to talk about? (My eyeballs, at least, are now rolling)

I see that there is a schematron rule to ensure that anything pointed to by means of a @corresp attribute is actually there, i.e. a test that for each @corresp="#foo" there is somewhere an @xml:id="foo" This seems admirable, but why is it only applicable to @corresp? Surely it is equally important for (at least) the other members of att.pointing.global which Simple includes, i.e. @next, @prev, and @ana ? Sauce goose gander, shirley?

I ran a check to see which elements in my revised Simple schema had defined processing models. The schema now has a total of 166 elements, of which 56 appear only in the header. 103 in all have a processing model, 98 in the text, 5 in the header. That leaves 11 textual elements with no procmod (and 51 in the header). I'm more worried by the textual ones. They are biblScope, body, code, editor, email, facsimile, relatedItem, surface, surfaceGrp, teiCorpus, zone Leaving aside the facsimile-related ones, I think I can probably make up models for the others. Shall I do so? Would anyone like to propose a suitable proc mod for facsimile and its children?

time to talk deprecation time

On our June telecon we committed to discussing the length of the deprecation of a few silly default attributes on this list. So I'm kicking off the conversation. 1) There are a bunch of attributes which have "unknown" as a default value, which we now plan on deprecating. (See ticket 1456 for a list of them.) Does this need a full 2 year deprecation, or is a shorter term more appropriate given how uncontroversial this is? 2) The class att.msExcerpt provides the @defective attribute, which has a default value of "false", which we'd also like to deprecate, but we're waiting for feedback from the TEI-L and MS-SIG before we do so. If the answer from those venues is "nope, nobody cares", do we do a full 2 year deprecation or not? My personal opinion is that (presuming we get the stylesheets to do the right thing, and presuming the prose, if any, is fixed up to match at the same time) 1 year is *plenty* for (1). (I might even be talked into 6 months.) I don't have a strong opinion on (2).

It uses a web-based visual editor they've created TEI Scribe (think lots of nested boxes rather than WYSIWYG) allows you to upload documents and DTDs (ick) to validate them against, and then seamlessly uses the eXist-db Instant Publishing Toolbox (that Wolfgang and Magdalena have worked on) as its publication system. I'm sure this will build more on the processing model aspects eventually. some progress on fx build

As y'all know the TEIP5-Test-dev project on Jenkins is broken. I just spent some time looking into this, and have some information, but no answers yet. * The problem is in the "detest" target of P5/Test/Makefile. * The problem seems to be from `$(ANT) -f antruntest.xml -Doutputname=detest -DoddFile=detest.odd validateodd`, which is generating unexpected output. * I added a -d switch to the ANT calls, and deleted the `rm` commands from the detest and clean targets in Test/Makefile and ran the build locally. The output put into detest1.log (which is both STDOUT and STDERR from the above ANT command, and which, after filtering with `grep` and `sed`, is expected to be a bunch of Schematron error messages like 'Error: both the versionDate and xml:lang attributes on "gloss" are required when it is a child of "elementSpec".') is: | [xslt] Using class org.apache.tools.ant.taskdefs.optional.TraXLiaison | [xslt] In file /home/syd/Documents/TEI-dev/P5/Test/detest.odd time: 1457836257000 | [xslt] Out file /dev/null time: 1467305096000 | [xslt] Style file ../p5odds.message.isosch.xsl time: 1467333273000 | [xslt] to /dev/null | [xslt] And there is one very interesting line that gets filtered out: | java.lang.NoSuchFieldException: _isNotSecureProcessing This output is from the validateodd ANT target. TEI Simple ODD update

Here's what I have so far done to the tei_simple.odd document so far, and why. Sadly this is not the end of the story, but I will send another message about that anon. 1. The original draft contained large amounts of promotional material about the Simple project, and some tutorial material about XML and about the processing model. I removed all of it, on the grounds that it was either inappropriate or unnecessary in a tutorial introduction to the Simple schema. 2. The schema included a large number of elements which seemed quite inappropriate for something called "simple" -- notably elements relating to detailed genetic transcription, or manuscript description. I removed these: if you want to make a detailed transcript of a manuscript, you need more than TEI Simple, but your task isn't simple either. 3. The schema originally included "all" of the TEI Header (in practice this seems to have meant "all of the TEI Header when only some modules are included", as opposed to "the TEI Header as defined by TEI All"). I can see no good reason for this, so I have defined a subset of the Header, excluding some dozen or so highly specialised elements (specifically: appInfo application cRefPattern calendar calendarDesc correction correspAction correspContext correspDesc geoDecl hyphenation interpretation normalization punctuation quotation refState refsDecl samplingDecl scriptNote segmentation styleDefDecl stdVals typeNote). Simple should make it easier to create a new header; if you want to import an arbitrary header created by someone else, use TEI All. 4. As a consequence of (3) above, the schema originally specified by schematron rule that several elements were permitted only in the header and not in the text. I have simplified these rules considerably; what would be more useful in my view would be to add rules reducing the number of elements permitted in the Header. 6. Stylesheets trip over whitespace

I've apparently broken the Stylesheets build, but it doesn't look like it's anything I *did*. It looks like the output of running the extract-isosch.xsl program I was working on against the Test/test.processedodd does not match the output in Test/expected-results/test.isosch ... because of different whitespace. However, when I run that same transform locally, the result does match -- there is no blob of extra whitespace before the line '<pattern id="test-div-constraint-abstractModel-structure-l-29">', and thus my output matches that in Test/expected-results/. I am tempted to just ignore whitespace in the comparison, i.e. with `diff -Bb`, but that's probably a bad plan. :-| I'll try to mess with this some more today, but in the meantime, if anyone has any ideas ...

I went to push up a commit. As is my usual habbit, I issued a `git status -uno` first. Git told me: | On branch dev | Your branch is ahead of 'origin/dev' by 4 commits. | (use "git push" to publish your local commits) | ... So that means I've committed 3 times that I don't remember. How do I find out what those commits were? (I.e. to what files, and what changes were made?) It's probably safe to just push (those other commits are probably just me saving work as I went along), but I'd prefer to know. Thanks.
