Quick skim, looks good. Might you consider a section at the top for "Who Is This For?" mentioning that the idiots in e question are likely to be those who are sophisticatedly writing their own ODD schemas that variants of existing ODDs? I.e. if you are just looking to customise TEI this isn't something you need to know, it is for a whole different class of idiot. I've always said compiled ODD. Resolved also makes sense. Talking of naming, can we get a consensus on what we call the thing that results from processing a TEI ODD with teitoodd ? It's analogous to the p5subset.xml we know and love, so maybe we should call it a subset, not an ODD (which is what teitoodd implies : give it foo.odd and you will receive foo.odd.odd) . It isn't an ODD as we know it, obviously. But it isn't necessarily a subset either. I think of it as a "compiled ODD" but maybe that has the wrong connotations. Its distinguishing feature is that any *Ref elements such as elementRef classRef etc. in the input will have been resolved so maybe its a "resolved ODD" or an "explicit ODD" ...

Yes. And like with a normal odd in a chained odd you have to moduleRef all the modules from the source that are going to be used in your subset. You don't get everything in the source by default, the first ODD just limits what is in the source that you have available to choose from in your second ODD. purifying odd doc

On my way home from Vienna I started drafting a little homily about how to update your old ODD to a pure new shiny one. The source is in github under TEI/Documentation/pureODD/purifyDoc.xml CETEICEAN renders it reasonably well (modulo a couple of gotchas on which I've posted issues) at http://teic.github.io/TCW/purifyDoc.html, but the nicest reading version is at http://teic.github.io/TCW/purifyDoc_static.html I'd very much welcome Council's comments before exposing it further. Seems to me we need to promote ODD a bit more, and this might be a good start. I'm also working on an "ODD for beginners" guide, but this one is aimed at old lags who made an ODD back in the day and are interested in getting up to speed with its new possibilities. So much so (I now realise) that I've completely forgotten to mention the existence of Roma in it. But I'll stop tweaking for now anent your comments...

Reminder: we are scheduled to meet at 17:00Z today, Tue 10-18. That's 10:00 in Vancouver, 13:00 in New York, 18:00 in London, and 19:00 in Vienna. A few hours ago my sister found her husband dead. So I may not be at our meeting, and if I do I will be in less than optimal surroundings and w/o any preparation. Someone else should set up the Google Hangout. (Or we should use Skype, and someone else should set that up. :-)

A repeat of the conversation so far is appended, below, for those who are not on the Council list. For me, one week later (Tue 10-25 either 17:00Z or, as RV suggests, 13:00Z) is actually somewhat better. One hour earlier (Tue 10-18 16:00Z) is quite a bit worse. But either way, to be honest Elisa, my inclination is to not open the can of worms of re-scheduling this. It took quite a bit of work to schedule these things, and we all knew full well at the outset that not everyone would make every meeting. Hi all, I we continue to follow our current pattern, we'll have our next telecon on the last Thursday in October, i.e. Thursday, October 27th at 09:00 EDT / 14:00 BST / 15:00 CEST. Is this still ok with everyone? Is it ok with our new members? If we're still going to try to release the first week of December (and I take that to mean the first full week, so Dec. 5–9), it would be nice to meet in November, but the last Thursday in November is Thanksgiving, so impossible for the USA folks. Would the Thursday before at the same time work? Or shall I put up a Doodle poll? Hugh

As promised at the FTF, I've now added the following catechetical (sp?) para at the start of the Simple doc following the first para. ~~~~ <p>Like every other TEI customization, TEI Simple was designed for use with a particular type of material. If the material you are planning to encode matches the following criteria, then TEI Simple is for you. If it does not, it may not be. <list> <item>You are encoding print material, rather than manuscript : Simple provides no way of encoding manuscript features such as correction, deletion, or scribal variation</item> <item>You are encoding material from the Early Modern period (i.e., up to the end of the nineteenth century): some of the features for which Simple provides encodings are rarely found in modern materials.</item> <item>You are encoding material written, broadly speaking, within the Western European tradition, using largely Western European characters. Simple does provide facilities for encoding short passages in non Western European languages, but many features needed to cope with Asian or ancient scripts are missing. </item> <item>Your intention is to provide a relatively simple encoding for a large amount of material, rather than a rich encoding of a small amount of material: Simple is intended to help libraries and archives wishing to go beyond simple digital facsimiles, rather than support specialist research. It does not, for example, include features for detailed linguistic tagging beyond simple word-level tagging, nor for specialised text types such as dictionaries, historical or biographical databases, etc. </item> </list> If your needs go beyond those summarized here, Simple may still be a good point of departure, and may be very useful as a basis for the creation of your own TEI customisation. We've got a Stylesheets study group scheduled for next Tuesday 10/18, but I've got an obnoxious schedule conflict just for that day (in which Tuesday turns into my Monday schedule thanks to Pitt's bizarre Fall Break) that has me teaching through most of it. I was wondering if there's a chance we can defer to the following Tuesday, 10/25 instead?Raff, I know you're only your way to Pittsburgh on 10/25, so that might not be good... reimbursement for meeting in Vienna

So I've read a bit more of the TEI policy and chatted with Michelle. Seems I was incorrect that TEI-C will only be reimbursing our meals up until Tue night. And I think John now uses PayPal to reimburse us, in which case my idea that it is better for an American to pay for a meal is probably outdated.[1] Anyway, if I understand correctly, each Council member should submit actual receipts for accommodation (hotel) and travel (taxi, bus, flight, parking, etc.) that is > 20 USD. Small trips, etc., less than that are just included in the incidentals, below. Each Council member should claim per diems for up to three "incidental" periods for every day she or he was in Vienna on TEI business: one for morning, one for afternoon, one for evening. And the entire conference (I now think) is considered TEI business. So, using myself as an example: I arrived in Vienna on Sat morning 09-23 and left on Sat morning 10-01. Thus for me there are 8 morning periods, 7 afternoon periods, and 7 evening periods. Each period is reimbursed as follows:[2] morning = 12.005 USD afternoon = 16.807 USD evening = 19.208 USD So I should request (+ (* 12.005 8) (* 16.807 7) (* 19.208 7) ), or 348.15 USD for incidentals. Meals are calculated similarly, except that you (obviously) only request the per diem reimbursement for a meal that you paid for. If the meal was provided by the conference (i.e., 2 lunches, 1 dinner) or paid for by a colleague (like our group dinners were), or you skipped that meal, then don't request reimbursement. breakfast = 48.020 USD lunch = 67.228 USD dinner = 76.832 USD Doesn't matter if your meal cost more or less, this is what you should ask for if you paid for it. (Again, make sure not to request payment for meals you didn't pay for;[3] and don't request per diem payment for a group meal you paid for, submit the actual receipt.) All this should be recorded on a Travel Reimbursement Form (which is at http://www.tei-c.org/Admin/TEI_travel_form.pdf) and mail it to John by the end of October. I've CCed Michelle and John on this so they can openly correct anything I've gotten wrong. Notes ----- [1] Which means I probably owe John an apology for paying for group meals. It's certainly a bit harder on him to deal with a single payment, where he has to check that no one I payed for is also submitting a per diem, than to just do per diems for everyone. [2] Using a base rate of 70% of the U.S. Department of State meals and incidentals per diem rate for Vienna.
