Is oddbyexample.xsl working for anyone? https://github.com/TEIC/Stylesheets/blob/dev/tools/oddbyexample.xsl This used to work. I don't think it not functioning for me is related to changes to in Pure ODD because I get the same error when I point to an earlier version of p5subset.xml for it to use. anyElement XSD pain

Because of the way we use RelaxNG as a pivot format in generating XSD, we're going to end up with invalid XSDs around the anyElement issue. Basically, XSD handles "anyXML" sections differently than RelaxNG, and so Relax discards information we can provide with anyElement to avoid the problem. Relax allows you to say "these elements/namespaces can't occur in the spot where any XML is allowed." XSD, on the other hand, lets you say any XML but "only these namespaces here", and/or "any namespace but the default one". Pure ODD is basically capable of saying either of these things, but as far as XSD, because we pipe through Relax, it ends up being able to say neither of them. This is a problem, because in the case of things like <content>, which can contain either Pure ODD TEI elements or RelaxNG, an <xsd:any/> means you have a nondeterministic content model (because "any" includes TEI elements). The XSD solution would be to say <xs:any namespace=" http://relaxng.org/ns/structure/1.0" processContents="skip"/>, but we can't get there from here. The long term solution is probably direct generation of XSD, which is something we'd like for other reasons. Near term might be to scale back use of anyElement or add a post-processing step to XSD generation that puts the necessary information back. Ideas?

We have a couple of options: 1. Allow the JTEI PDF export to be broken for 18.x and above. 2. Allow it to be broken for 17.x and below. 3. Set a version limit on the framework which prevents its being installed on anything below 18.0. #3 would leave existing users of older Oxygens with a framework which could not be updated. #2 would affect only those users who have an older Oxygen but still want to do PDF export from JTEI. anyElement voodoo

I've been working on https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/issues/1373 <https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/issues/1373> and have run into another snag. This time with the tests. A bit of background: Some TEI elements need to contain stuff from other XML namespaces that we don't care to validate. Examples are xenoData and egXML. SVG or MathML might be examples of external namespaces you might want to include data from. Because of bad decisions made long ago by very smart people, RelaxNG automatically does DTD-style ID checking. Elements can't have conflicting ID types, e.g. an id attribute that is an xsd:ID and one that isn't. The difficulty comes in with the way these "catch-all" elements are defined, which is special. They implicitly allow non xsd:ID id attributes (because they allow anything). This means that when you use one of these special "any" elements in a RelaxNG schema, you have to exclude the TEI namespaced elements (because any of them can have @xml:id) and the egXML element (which also allows xml:id, and which is in its own namespace). If you include any external schemas that define IDs, they too must be excluded from these special elements. We solve this now by futzing around with the macro.anyXML element and adding those exclusions to it. With the new <anyElement>, which tackles the unknowable XML content problem in a slightly different way, we make the definition of those special elements a bit cleaner and easier, but we also have to cope with juggling exclusions on more elements. Lou’s proposed changes, which he outlines in http://teic.github.io/TCW/anyXMLproposal.html <http://teic.github.io/TCW/anyXMLproposal.html>, mean that if a schema pulls in SVG, elements like xenoData must add an exclusion of the SVG namespace. When we used macro.anyXML everywhere, we could do this redefinition in one place, but now we can’t. We have to do it on each included element that uses <anyElement>. Otherwise I’d have to redefine xenoData, egXML, and any other elements that can include random XML. If that ODD included tagdocs, I’d have to redefine another 3 elements. So that leads to the question: do we want to come up with a simpler syntax for adding excluded namespaces? I could see putting a new attribute on the moduleRef that pulls in the KML schema, for example…any opinions? I’ve got another problem that may be a bug in trang. There’s a workaround, fortunately. I’ve gone on long enough for one email, I think. :-)

I just skimmed the 15 open tickets flagged as "Guidelines 3.1.0"[1]. IMHO, none are outright release blocking, but #1501 "Cannot generate valid DTD within oXygen" is seriously high priority, and we should be working on it ASAP. I've CCed Martin on this, as he knows a lot about the oXygen framework. I note that there has been a lot of activity on #1373 "Need for some way to represent macro.anyXML in Pure ODD", which I have yet to have the chance to read. I hope to dive into this issue tomorrow. But in any case, I do not think it a release blocker to leave PureODD without a macro.anyXML replacement for a release or two -- better to do it right than to do it rushed, IMHO. Bibliography and un-breaking the build

Hi All, I spent some time yesterday trying to get the builds running again, with mixed success. My fix uncovered a new problem, triggered by the effort to do a better job with references to sources in examples. Take a look at http://teic.github.io/TEI/BIB.html <http://teic.github.io/TEI/BIB.html>. First, I think item 1 is a problem. It looks heinous, and I’ve a hard time imagining why I’d care to visit individual examples with no source in this way. Maybe we should just suppress it in the output? Second, back-references to examples from specs are a problem. Item #152 is currently breaking ePub validation, because the back-references point at the http://teic.github.io/TEI/ref-reg.html page, but the examples don’t actually occur on that page, they occur on http://teic.github.io/TEI/examples-reg.html <http://teic.github.io/TEI/examples-reg.html> (both pages are generated from the same source, of course). We could change all back-references to spec pages to go to the examples pages, I suppose. Anyone have a better idea?

Roma Sanity Checker - commenting out

Hi all, I've just gone on tei-c.org and commented out the Sanity Checker in /usr/share/tei-roma/roma/templates/main.tem since it is broken. (Someone needs to look at https://github.com/TEIC/Roma/blob/master/roma/sanitychecker.php#L239 and make it work with Pure ODD content models rather than RNG.) The version on www.tei-c.org also said that they could contact tei(a)it.ox.ac.uk for best effort support. This has, sadly, had to be withdrawn and also explains why we were getting so many incident reports about it not working. There are 3 different processes (that I am immediately aware of) for getting the ISO Schematron constraints from an ODD: 1) teitoschematron 2) generate a RELAX NG schema 3) extract the constraints My homework assignment, i.e. this post, is supposed to be about (3). However, it is worth noting that, through a process similar to the first few steps Martin outlined in homework #1, (1) just calls the same routine as (3). (However, it does not merge a customization ODD with P5 source ODD before processing. It probably should.) So here goes. The big-picture extraction process is *really* simple. A single stylesheet, Stylesheets/odds/extract-isosch.xsl, is run with an ODD file as input; it produces ISO Schematron as output. To be most useful, the input should be the "merged" ODD file created when a customization is applied to the P5 source. The output is a (mostly) usable file with the (hopefully) correct ISO Schematron code. But the devil is in the details ... this is pretty complicated stuff. "Why is it complicated?" you ask; "wouldn't just yanking everything that is in the ISO Schematron namespace out and copying it over do the trick?" Turns out that won't work, for several reasons, two of which I'll mention here. First, because the rules of <constraintSpec> say that if it is in (e.g.) an <elementSpec>, you don't have to specify a @context on an <sch:rule>, rather the context is assumed to be the element being defined; so this extraction process has to build an <sch:rule> with the right @context. Second, because some of the constraints are not expressed in <constraintSpec>, but rather are expressed by @validUntil. But that said, the basic underlying process is, indeed, to find all the stuff in the ISO Schematron namespace and copy it to the output. And therein lies the first problem. In a TEI ODD, the <schemaSpec> element is (perhaps unwisely) repeatable.[1] The `roma` commandline tool only processes the first <schemaSpec> that is encountered (in document order). I think odd2odd.xsl does the same thing (unless a different <schemaSpec> is specified via the 'selectedScema' parameter).[2] This leads to a potential mis-match: if a single ODD file defines two schemas, the Schematron from both of them will be extracted by extract-isosch.xsl, whereas the rest of the schema and custom documentation will be built only from the first schema defined. This is not as big of a problem is it sounds. First, nobody (that I know of) actually puts two <schemaSpec>s in a single file. Second, the extract-isosch.xsl program is typically run on an ODD that has already been "merged". So even if the input to the merge process had two or more <schemaSpec>s, the output has only one. So what does extract-isosch.xsl do? A lot, actually. Here's an overview with some details thrown in. 1) On matching the root of the input ODD, the entire input tree is processed in two passes. This template is found circa line 129. 2) Pass #1 "decorates" the input tree with extra attributes about the namespaces. That is, pass #1 (which is mode "NSdecoration") is an identity transform EXCEPT that each <attDef>, <elementSpec>, and <schemaSpec> gets two new attributes: @nsu (namespace URI) = the URI of the namespace of the construct being defined; the default is the TEI namespace for elements and no namespace for attributes. @nsp (namespace prefix) = a prefix for use with the @nsu. An intelligent one is chosen heuristically if possible; if not one is just created out of thin air. 3) The results of pass #1 are then processed in pass #2, which starts out in mode "schematron-extraction".[3] A skeleton of the output schema is spit out with 6 major sections: * namespaces, declared * namespaces, implicit * keys (including problematic ones) * the constraints themselves * deprecations * paramLists 4) Namespaces, declared. All <sch:ns> elements (except those inside an <egXML>) that are in the right language and do not have a prefix of "xsl" are copied over to the output. (At the moment, I cannot think of why the XSLT namespace is exempted, or moreover, why it is found by testing the prefix, not the URI.) 5) Namespaces, implicit. All distinct namespaces that we calculated in pass 1 are converted to <sch:ns> elements and copied into the output. Again, the XSLT namespace is exempted, this time by URI. 6) Keys. All <xsl:key> elements (except those inside an <egXML>) that are in the right language are processed. (Said processing is that they are copied over to the output.) 7) A warning message is generated if any <sch:key> elements are encountered. (Because there is no <sch:key> element. :-) 8) Constraints. Every <constraint> (except those inside an <egXML>) that is in the right language, and is in a <constraintSpec scheme=isoschematron>[5] is processed as follows. a) if there is a child <sch:pattern>, the children (of the <constraint>) are processed b) if there is a child <sch:rule>, a wrapper <sch:pattern> (with a generated @id) is output and children (of the constraint) are processed and the output of that is put within the <sch:pattern>. c) if there is a child <sch:assert> or <sch:report>, both a wrapper <sch:pattern> (with a generated @id) and its child <sch:rule> (with a generated @context) are generated, and children are processed within. 9) Deprecations. The code is only set up (at the moment) to handle cases of @validUntil that actually occur in the _Guidelines_ at the time said code was written. (E.g., there is code to handle elementSpec//attDef/@validUntil, but not constraintSpec/ @validUntil, because even though it is valid, there are no <constraintSpec>s with @validUntil in the GLs.) The list is as follows; note that @validUntil inside an <egXML> is always ignored. * elementSpec//attDef/@validUntil * classSpec//attDef/@validUntil * elementSpec/@validUntil * elementSpec//valItem/@validUntil[6] 10) Deprecation, elementSpec//attDef. An <sch:pattern> with a child <sch:rule> whose @context is set to the element being defined by the <elementSpec> is output. (Luckily, we put an attribute on that <elementSpec> back in pass 1 that gives us its namespace prefix.) That <sch:rule> has a child <sch:report> that fires whenever the attribute being specified is found (again, we can use the namespace prefix we ascertained in pass 1).[7] 11) Deprecation, classSpec//attDef. Same idea as above, except that developing the @context is harder because it might be any element that is a member of the class. Note that this code only searches for elements that are members of the class being defined -- it does NOT look for elements that are members of a class that is a member of the class being defined, or members of a class that is a member of a class that is a member of the class being defined.[8] 12) Deprecation, elementSpec. An sch:pattern/sch:rule/sch:report is output. The <sch:rule> has a @context set to the element being defined. (Again, using the namespace prefix inserted in pass 1.) The report has a @test set to the string (not the function) "true()". (Thus, when interpreted by Schematron, it will be the function "true()".) So the <sch:report> fires whenever the condition on its parent sch:rule/@context is met. 13) Deprecation, elementSpec//valItem. Similar to the above, but instead of a @test of "true()", the test is for the specific value being defined. 14) Parameter lists. I really don't understand this well, in large part because I've never seen any output generated from it. (Even building tei_simple does not fire this code.) But it looks to me like we will get an <sch:pattern> (with a nice @id) that has a child <sch:rule> that fires on <param> elements that are inside a <model> whose @behaviour is the one being currently defined. That <sch:rule> will have a child <sch:assert> that tests that the @name (of the <param>) matches one of the names being defined in this <paramList>. Worth noting that in cases where the <constraint> is inside an <attDef>, the value of the resulting sch:rule/@context is an attribute. I do not see why this should be a problem, nor I have found anything in ISO 19757-3:2006 that suggests it should be a problem. However, I know at least 1 Schematron processor fails to work correctly in this case. Notes ----- [1] Bizarrely, it is model.divPart; I would have thought that, if anything, it would be in model.divLike. [2] This means, I think, that the work of extracting the @ident of the first <schemaSpec> is performed twice when you run `roma`. [3] I have to admit, I don't fully understand why that template, matching "/" in mode "schematron-extraction", fires. The content of the variable that is selected by the <apply-templates> is all of the nodes that are children of the document node, not the document node itself. I also am not quite sure why we pass the <TEI> element in as a parameter, rather than just set a variable from within the template. [4] The result of the two steps to generate <sch:ns> namespace declarations for the Schematron may well be that a single namespace URI may be bound to two occurrences of the same prefix, or to two or more different prefixes. I do not see why this should be a problem, nor I have found anything in ISO 19757-3:2006 that suggests it should be a problem. However, I am aware of at least 1 Schematron processor that gets very upset by occurrences of <sch:ns> that have either the same @prefix or the same @uri as another occurrence of <sch:ns>. [5] Uh-oh. That should now be changed to process those with scheme=schematron, too. [6] The complete set of cases that exist in the _Guidelines_ is: 1 classSpec/attList/attDef/defaultVal/@validUntil 2 elementSpec/@validUntil 4 elementSpec/attList/attDef/@validUntil 4 elementSpec/attList/attDef/defaultVal/@validUntil 28 macroSpec/@validUntil Martin & I don't think there is anything to be done for the <defaultVal> cases (after all, a processor would not know if the value was specified or defaulted, which is why we don't like them in the first place! :-) So the only case that is not handled but perhaps should be is the most common: <macroSpec>. [7] I just noticed that although we test for the attribute correctly using the namespace prefix, the message includes just the attribute name -- it does not include the namespace prefix. Since in 99% of all cases, and in 100% of actual current cases, there is no namespace prefix, this doesn't matter much. Nonetheless, it should probably be fixed. [8] I just noticed that both the definition of and reference to $fqgis (which stands for "fully qualified generic identifiers", I believe) are separated with union operators (aka "or bars", '|'). That is probably an error that won't cause a problem, because (I am guessing) by the time it is referenced it is already a single string, so the @separator has no effect. Release Planning

We discussed Release 3.1.0 today. For those who couldn’t make it, the plan is to release on December 6th, with the release branch created on November 23rd. Can everyone please: 1. Look through your tickets and assign any that have been done since the last release, or will be done in the next 3 weeks or so to the 3.1.0 milestone (https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/milestone/2 <https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/milestone/2>). 2. Remove anything that definitely won’t be done by the release date from that milestone, and 3. Identify any issues that absolutely must be done. I thought we had a "release blocker" label, but I don’t see one, so maybe I’ll make one, just so these stand out. Thanks! Hugh

It's in the very center of Prague, at the Centre for Medieval Studies (CMS), Jilska 1 (see map here: http://goo.gl/IFjdC9) In my own experience, this is a very nice and convenient meeting room. If it's not too much of an inconvenience, I would be in favour of starting the Council meeting early, on the Sunday, so we can organise a public day of study without loosing too many Council members to XML Prague. According to Lucie, having your meeting on the Sunday would actually be possible, even though the Centre is not normally working on Sundays, She would ask a technician to be present, in case you would run in any sort of issue, especially regarding Internet access or other IT thing. Practically, this means that we would have to budget an extra to pay this technician coming to work on a Sunday. I think something like 200 EUR would cover this. Keeping in mind that the room would be lent to the Council for free, do you think this is OK? Regarding coffee / lunch breaks, it's possible to arrange catering in the space just in front of the room, if you wish to save time (maybe it would not be possible on the Sunday though, I need to check). Alternatively, there is a wealth of choices for lunch just around the CMS, since this is literally the heart of touristic Prague. Catering as well as restaurants are rather inexpensive. I just reviewed our emails on the topic, and have this (not very helpful) summary of positions taken to date: Elli says “Either print or bookish… print” today (though previously concerned that Print was misleading) Magda says “I prefer “Go, or Stick to Simple, or Print, but not Bookish” Elisa says “I abhor Simple… better off with Print or Bookish” James says “I would have voted Simple; definitely against bookish” Syd says “I dislike Simple; OK with Bookish or Go” [and various other suggestions] Hugh says “I voted reluctantly for Print” could do Bookish; definitely not Simple Raff likes Bookish; no big issue with Print; Simple may be misleading Peter suggest “go” and other things Kevin likes Bookish; Martina “dislikes Print; no problem with keeping it Simple”; Bookish is not too bad. So another way of approaching this (since democratic elections dont seem to work) might be to look at this little table DISLIKE TOLERABLE SUPPORTED Bookish JC,MT HC,SB,EM,EB KT,RV Go SB PS,MT Print MS,JC RV,HC,EB EM Simple RV,HC, SB,EB MT MS, JC I leave it to you to correct this table. And indeed decide how to interpret it. Does the fact that Bookish (for example) has just as many people strongly disliking it as wish to promote it suggest that it is too divisive to be adopted? Bear in mind that we want to find the least worst solution here, which will upset/confuse the smallest number of people...

Then I would have voted for TEI Simple. I'm definitely against Bookish. Sorry I didn't vote before and can't make the meeting. Since this is somewhat a marketing decision, why not involve the board as well? Rerun the poll using the board-council list? We will be stuck with the decision for a very long time. what's in a name?

I'd really like us to come to a conclusion on what the-schema-formerly-known-as-simple should be called, this week if possible. So far I've noticed some mild approval (and one objection) to renaming it as TEI Print. There's also been some mild approval for the notion that its current name is not good. But no other alternative seems to command support. My experience has always been that deciding on a name for anything can take weeks and weeks and never reach any satisfactory conclusion because it's always possible to say "nah I dont like it". So can we have a sharp deadline for this discussion? I suggest Monday 24th, midnight CET. And a rule that says "if you don't like [name] you have to propose a better one" might help too.

TEI Simple name poll

When polling closed 15 minutes ago, 5 votes had been cast. This is only half the current membership of Council. I conclude that there is no strong desire amongst council members to express an opinion on the matter, which I persist in thinking suggests we would be ill-advised to change the status quo. Would it be a good idea to go with the majority figure (3 votes) when that represents the view of less than a third of the electorate? I think not. I am therefore going to assume this baby is still called TEI Simple, and intend to devote the little time left before it is integrated it into the next release to improving the examples, and checking that it works properly, rather than the (fairly daunting) task of changing its name everywhere. We also, may I remind you, need to make it more visible on the website, and integrate it into the oXygen framework.
