Oxygen plugin status

Hi All, Martina, Syd and I met this morning and made changes to the Oxygen plugin build to account for jar file changes in the latest Oxygen release. That seems to have worked, in that the bleeding-edge plugin built successfully on Jenkins, we were able to install it on both Oxygen 24.1 and 25, and it mostly works. The build of the stable plugin, which I ran manually on my Jenkins server, also seems to have been successful, but we haven't tested that. I say mostly because we found two different issues which are not directly related to the plugin, and which were broken in previous versions of it. One is that the ODD-to-PDF build fails with an out-of-memory error when transforming tei_all. It's possible that the Oxygen folks have kept it working in their version of the framework by adding additional memory to the transformation, but I can't see how they're doing that, if they are. Anyway, the same transformation works OK for tei_lite.odd, so I don't think this is a major issue. A more serious problem is that the epub transformation fails because a handful of CSS files are in the wrong place relative to how the transformation runs. If you look at the Makefile in the Stylesheets, you can see that it copies CSS files to a second location where the transformation is expecting to find them (a line added to the file by Sebastian in 2014). However, the framework/plugin does not use the Makefile, so that step never happens, and the build fails. The Oxygen folks have fixed this in their version of the framework by patching our XSLT to point to the files where they actually are. That seems sensible to me, and I think what we actually have is a bug in the Stylesheets, where relative paths are used to point to things and not resolved against a solid location, so running the same transformation in different ways expects to find the same files in two different places. The Makefile solution of making copies of them seems a bit like a hack to me. If you are subscribed to the bleeding-edge plugin, you should get updates, and if you make use of it over the next few days and have any problems, do raise an issue on the oxygen-tei repo. I think it would be prudent to fix the Stylesheets bug before the next TEI / Stylesheets release, because a new "stable" version of the plugin will be released at that time, but the bug has been there for a while so it's not crucial. There are still various pending PRs but we urge you to keep your hands away from the keyboard since we already entered freeze period (i.e. the real freeze, not the hot freeze!) Additionally, we will then move all open issues and PRs from the current milestones to the next. I created a PR by pulling in the new p5subset.xml and "fixing“ the tests by simply copying from actual-results to expected results where necessary. So the intellectual task is to check whether these changes (to the expected-results in the PR) are indeed expected or whether they reveal some issues. How would you be doing the task of updating p5subset.xml?

Oxygen plugin update

Hi all, It turns out that we can't just adopt the new framework files provided by Radu. What we need to do is to compare each feature/transformation in the three current framework files with the new framework files, and figure out how to update each of our configurations based on the Oxygen ones; I'm really not sure what that will involve, and I don't have time to do it now, so I think it's time for Council to step in on this ticket: <https://github.com/TEIC/oxygen-tei/issues/27> I'm going to tentatively schedule some time next Friday to look at this if no-one else is interested, but until then I won't really be able to work on it, so be aware that if you update to Oxygen 25 and you're subscribed to the stable or bleeding-edge plugin, things may break. We might want to warn users too through TEI-L. I thought we had managed to convince the Oxygen team that we really need plenty of warning when they're going to release a new version that will break things for us, but they don't seem to have got the message. It's not really in their interest, of course -- our plugin enables people to keep using old Oxygen versions and still have up-to-date TEI and Stylesheets, so I can see how that might not be something they're too keen on. But we also have mutual interests that are not being properly tended; it makes no sense for Oxygen to release a new version with baked-in TEI 4.4.0 when we're just a couple of weeks away from releasing 4.5.0. I think it would help if Council had a more formal relationship with the Oxygen team and held regular coordination meetings. New Oxygen and Oxygen plugin

Hi all, We just got notification from Radu that Oxygen 25 will be coming out soon with incompatibilities which will break the plugin functionality with a comment on this ticket yesterday: <https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/issues/2251> Then today I see that Oxygen 25 is already out. That means that anyone installing Oxygen 25 who is using EITHER the stable plugin OR the bleeding-edge version will have broken transformations until we get new versions out. Radu has very kindly sent me the new versions of the framework files which he has modified for Oxygen 25, and which will be backwards-compatible with Oxygen 21+, but not with older Oxygen versions. We currently claim that the plugin supports Oxygen 18.1+, but we will have to abandon support for anything before 21. I presume this is OK with everyone; I can't really see any alternative, other than spawning multiple plugin versions for old Oxygen versions, which is impractical. So I propose to make those changes this morning. If anyone objects, please let me know; if anyone would like to be involved, so there's someone else on Council who has their eye on the plugin, give me a shout. I'll wait an hour or two before changing anything so we can do it together if that's useful for anyone. Within the next few hours there should be a new bleeding edge plugin build to test, and I'll first test it with my existing Oxygen 24 then update my 24 to 25 and see if that breaks anything. This is very last-minute, which is not ideal, so I hope nothing does break. This is a phase where we pay special attention to open pull requests and issues that we want to bring into the upcoming release. Please do not commit major changes to the schema (except if they have been tested in a branch, e.g. ab), changes in prose are still ok. Freeze is on Thursday, Oct 20. Freeze means that the release branches are created and that only the release techs should commit to the release branches. OxGarage repo archived

Dear Councilists, as announced at Newcastle Anne and I were taking last steps towards TEIGarage: * cleaned up issues in the OxGarage repo (at lease two of them were Stylesheets issues so we transferred them there) * added a deprecation notice to the OxGarage GUI * added a deprecation notice to the OxGarage GitHub README * added a deprecation notice to the OxGarage Dockerhub README * deployed TEIGarage at https://teigarage.tei-c.org * … and finally archived the OxGarage repo So, for the time being we might keep both old OxGarage and new TEIGarage running in parallel. Yet, if no errors show up we should simply replace OxGarage with TEIGarage in the near future. Have a great weekend Peter

Updated Travel Reimbursement form

Dear All, Those who need to submit a reimbursement form should use the one at https://tei-c.org/tei_travel_form/. There isn’t a US State Department rate for Newcastle, so may I suggest we pick Glasgow? It seems to me roughly in line with what I paid, when I paid for meals. That would be: Breakfast Lunch Dinner $12 $20 $33 Per Diem is for the days of the Council/Board meetings only, not for the whole conference. You’re better off sending me the form and receipts in digital formats. There is a mailing address on the form, but it will probably be quicker if you submit things electronically. Bounce Messages

Looks like all of us who use Gmail had our list membership suspended this morning due to excessive bounces. I’ve gone in an un-suspended folks, but this is probably another signal that we need to consider alternatives. Maybe even different modalities. Modern email is a shitshow, and Gmail may have just decided it didn’t want to deliver a few messages from the ADHO mail server. Note that if you use Gmail, you’ve probably missed some messages. I might suggest we copy any important communications to Slack. And maybe talk about how to proceed in Newcastle. Hugh
