Hi all, Please see this ticket: <https://github.com/TEIC/oxygen-tei/issues/30> Council really needs to handle this; if there's no one on Council with the time or interest, then I suggest we get rid of the stable plugin completely. It's causing more trouble than it's worth at this point. We shouldn't be encouraging people to install something that doesn't work properly. Can someone remind me for which days we should be claiming per diem? And accommodation? (I arrived on the Thursday so I could teach on the Friday, I'm assuming that is ok.) Also which days there were meals either catered or bought by someone? Also an email on the board list seemed to be suggesting that the TEI was covering registration costs for the conference (or am I mis-reading that Hugh?) Does that apply to Council as well? (Obviously where institutions are able to cover expenses that is better.) Zenodo

Hi all, having a long train ride home from Graz I was looking into our TEI Zenodo publications of the Guidelines. Since we decided that we wanted all our published releases to show up at Zenodo and because these are quite a few I decided to write a little script rather than doing those uploads manually. I want to document here what I tested and what I’m about to do so you can stop me if it’s mad or something is missing. (BTW, Zenodo has a sandbox where I was testing my scripts) #1 I have not found a way to directly upload to Zenodo from an URL so first I needed to download all the zip archives from Sourceforge (GitHub only has releases from 2.9.0 onwards) to my local machine #2 I wanted to use the HTML readme files we already have to use them as zenodo description (find them at https://www.tei-c.org/Vault/P5/current/doc/tei-p5-doc/ <https://www.tei-c.org/Vault/P5/current/doc/tei-p5-doc/>) but needed to get rid of the HTML header etc. I was doing this with XSLT, see https://gist.github.com/peterstadler/a33df4f7cb3f1234c8f15d73a080a192 <https://gist.github.com/peterstadler/a33df4f7cb3f1234c8f15d73a080a192> #3 needed to rename some of the readme files to get proper three digit version numbers #4 create a python script for adding our releases to zenodo, see https://gist.github.com/peterstadler/79d402bb989c8a066b482381979557a3 <https://gist.github.com/peterstadler/79d402bb989c8a066b482381979557a3> The whole process works quite nicely but will need some manual tweaking (of e.g. dates) afterwards (once I move from the sandbox to the real system). Because I will need to call the zenodo support after the ingestion to fix the sort order, I want to be sure that I have everything. NB: all the metadata can be changed afterwards but the files may not be touched anymore. Every new upload than creates a new version which will show up as the latest(!) So here are some questions: a) At Sourceforge there is a release 0.9 while in the readme there is a 0.6 (but not vice versa). Is this just a typo somewhere and do these releases belong together?! b) There is some gap between 0.6 and 0.9 (or 1.0) and before 0.2.1. Does anyone have more releases anywhere? c) release notes are missing for 0.2.1 and 1.4.1 Many thanks for reading until the end Best Peter

That documentation at the main URL is quite out of date (Still lists oxford's OxGarage for example). attending SIGs

Hi all, I asked our fearless leader last night what she would like us to do about SIGs and she suggested that i ask the rest of council. I was wondering who is thinking of going to which SIG if any? Shouldn't we have some Council presence in order to know what is they are thinking about generally? Wordsmithing much appreciated! I figure Martina would send this. Dear TEI-L The TEI Council has released a new version of Roma, the web interface for creating TEI customizations. Council member Raff Viglianti is the lead developer. Find it at https://romabeta.tei-c.org/ The software is currently in beta and we invite the TEI community to try it out and report issues on the GitHub repository https://github.com/teic/romajs Please note that Roma beta currently only supports pure ODD and uploading customizations with RelaxNG content models will fail. There is also no support yet for @source attributes so all customizations will start from the latest stable version of the TEI. This will be addressed in the future. Roma "classic" will remain available at https://roma.tei-c.org/ until the new version reaches a more stable and complete status, at which point it will be replaced. After that, we plan to keep it available at a different address but it will not get further updated. If you are at the TEI Conference and Members Meeting in Graz, please come visit Raff's poster about Roma this Thursday Sept 19 to learn more and leave suggestions!

Broken links on the TEI site

Hi Luis, At the TEI Council meeting, we noticed that if you go here: <https://tei-c.org/tools/stylesheets/> there are two broken links. The first goes to the XSLT documentation, which is missing from the server for some reason. The second is a link into the wiki, which goes to http rather than https. If you click on that link with Chrome, it'll work because Chrome pre-emptively tries https, but other browsers try plain http and get a 404. So: how do we get the Stylesheets and their documentation onto the server; and can you set up the explicit redirects for all http URLs to https? Also, can we have directory browsing turned on for the whole server? We want people to be able to browse around through various versions of the Guidelines etc. Thanks, Martin

Trial builds to address the circularity issue

Hi all, Ahead of our discussion of the build circularity today, I've set up a couple of extra builds on my Jenkins server to try out one of the ideas we've been kicking around. I now have these build jobs: Stylesheets-dev-with-P5-release: this builds the dev branch of the Stylesheets, but using the p5subset.xml from the current P5 release. Stylesheets-dev-with-P5-release: this does a comprehensive build of the P5-dev branch (tests followed by a full build of the output), but using the latest release version of the TEI stylesheets. The stylesheets used to be available on the TEI website, but that's no longer the case, so I've ended up installing the deb packages on my Jenkins instead. They're still building, so I don't know whether they'll be successful or not, but if either or both of them fail, at least we'll have some idea of the kind of issues we might face if we do take this approach to avoiding the circularity problem. Yes, the real difference is that for teidata.enumerated then you should have a valList in your ODD enumerating the specific values for your project. Indeed... if we wanted to add checks into an ODD editor like Roma, one could have it check through all classes and elements included in the ODD and find any attributes with teidata.enumerated and check that they have a valList, and if not prompt a user to enter one. Any objections if I modified tei:org/@role to be teidata.enumerated instead of teidata.word? One way could be making sure the header is only added to the /Vault location in Apache or Nginx. The problem with expected-results and p5subset

Hi all, I think there's a possible partial solution to the chaos resulting from the fact that Stylesheets tests depend on p5subset.xml, so whenever the Specs change, the expected-results in the Stylesheets tests may also change. This is because we always try to use the same p5subset for every test: the current release. But if we make each test point at a specific version of p5subset.xml in the Vault, then that version will never change; so the Stylesheets output should also never change, unless we change the Stylesheets themselves, in which case we want to see what changes in the expected-results anyway. Hi all, isn't that how SF shells always worked? I remember there always being done weirdness around this. I.e. easier to scp the files but getting an actual login was always difficult in some way. nesting TEI, standoff

Dear all, I would like to respond to the TEI-L regarding our request for feedback on nesting TEI and deprecating teiCorpus, and thank them for the discussion. In light of the discussion I believe the nesting TEI is off the table for the upcoming release. I'll set this on the agenda for the F2F meeting in Graz. Furthermore, I want to propose to dedicate the Monday afternoon in Graz - which is the last day of our F2F meeting - to the standoff discussion and ask the original proposers (and perhaps others who were involved with the discussion) to join the meeting if they happen to be in Graz early. This could be a break-out group, while other Council members not directly involved in the discussion could continue to work on other issues. A half day is certainly not enough, but that could lead to a follow-up workshop, as we had already considered. Please let me know what you think. Best wishes, Martina

minor schema-altering corrigible error fixed

I just discovered that the TEI schema had "alternate" as one of the values for classRef/@expand. The prose in the Guidelines, the remarks in the tagdoc, and the Stylesheets all say it should be "alternation". I see this as a corrigible error, and thus have fixed it. It is, however, a schema-changing alteration, and thus should be announced quite up-front in the release notes. BTW, I have checked through all of the Examplars, and none were using either value. See issues #1903 and #1904.

Hi Syd, your recent commit "Work on #1867“ https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/commit/8c67de23c612248f399962451100fd9de1dc812c broke the build with the error message "error: duplicate attribute „type““. I see that this is a combined issue of Guidelines #1867 and Stylesheets #370 where probably the Stylesheets need to be fixed first. So, since we are in refridge period I think it’d be better to revert that change and/or move this work into a separate branch. Best Peter

Condensing (or compressing) Refrigeration?

Dear Councillors, My calendar tells me we have entered the Refrigeration period leading to the Freeze scheduled for 9 July next week. I have seen that Refrigeration is often, ironically, a moment of heated work as we try to resolve big issues and introduce something we care about for the next release. I am trying that now with the long overdue Measurement code (unitDecl, unitDef, etc), which really ought to be coming out. I see intense activity with uniHan right now and wonder if that too is targeted for this release? Here are some timing issues and updates. I have communicated with my original release tech partner, Vanessa, and we agreed that, given the lack of time she has had lately to work with us and concentrate on the TEI, that it is best she defer being a release tech until another time. As I see it, too, I expect this release to be challenging—I am expecting the unexpected—because of all the server issues recently and because the dev branch is still unstable with all the unwanted excitement over the simplePrint ODD. Vanessa asked me to convey her sincere apologies to Council for her absences and lack of time. I hope after the season of deep preoccupation and sadness that she will rejoin us with all the energy I know she has, but now is not the moment. I am thankful to Magdalena for volunteering to host me near Warsaw after the DH2019 conference next week, and she agreed that the two of us will be the release techs. As we look at prepping this next release, timing now really depends on both of us. I’m visiting her from 13-20 July—and I think Magdalena has her own travel plans starting (Saturday) 20 July. I think we’re safest if things go wrong to make sure we do the release in the middle of that week. But it sounds like we’re still heatedly coding toward this release, so I’d like to take stock of what we can complete just now—and reset the Refrigeration period, also perhaps scale back on some maybe too ambitious things we thought we could feasibly complete so we can properly refrigerate. Thinking about this debacle again, it seems to me that the approach taken in issue #370 (oh tei_simpleprint.odd has stopped working: so there must be something wrong with it) is really not defensible. 1. The unmodified tei_simplePrint odd is structured in exactly the same way as countless other ODDs, not excluding the TEI Guidelines. It has free floating globs of specification elements, which are invoked from a single schemaSpec by means of specGrpRefs. 2. The only thing which is slightly different about it is that some objects are declared more than once in multiple specGrps, with @mode=change. This is because the specGrps are organised thematically (for example one contains changes needed to introduce processing models, another contains changes needed to introduce schematron rules). This kind of logical organisation is perfectly reasonable as far as I am aware, indeed why else bother to have specGrps. 3. The only objection I can see to it is that an ODD processor has to decide how to combine two or more @mode=change specs. It's not just a matter of applying one set of changes: there may be a bunch of them. This is kind of the way unification grammars work in NLP: you build up the complete spec one bit at a time. Yes, occasionally you may find contradictions -- one spec adds an attribute x (say) which another one deletes, or gives a different datatype to. But this is not the only place where ODD processing is underspecified and rules of thumb are not hard to imagine (e.g. delete always wins; in the absence of delete, most recent modification always wins; etc.). 4. Moreover, and this is where I am really a bit annoyed, THIS USED TO WORK! So some infrastructural change has made it impossible to run the makefile and impossible to use the simpleprint odd as originally designed. And instead of trying to find what change has caused this, we are shooting the messenger. This my friends is called zealotry. In the immortal words of Michael SpMcQ in another recent context, "please don't".

I have seen that Refrigeration is often, ironically, a moment of heated work as we try to resolve big issues and introduce something we care about for the next release. I am trying that now with the long overdue Measurement code (unitDecl, unitDef, etc), which really ought to be coming out. I see intense activity with uniHan right now and wonder if that too is targeted for this release? Here are some timing issues and updates. I have communicated with my original release tech partner, Vanessa, and we agreed that, given the lack of time she has had lately to work with us and concentrate on the TEI, that it is best she defer being a release tech until another time. As I see it, too, I expect this release to be challenging—I am expecting the unexpected—because of all the server issues recently and because the dev branch is still unstable with all the unwanted excitement over the simplePrint ODD. Vanessa asked me to convey her sincere apologies to Council for her absences and lack of time. I hope after the season of deep preoccupation and sadness that she will rejoin us with all the energy I know she has, but now is not the moment. I am thankful to Magdalena for volunteering to host me near Warsaw after the DH2019 conference next week, and she agreed that the two of us will be the release techs. As we look at prepping this next release, timing now really depends on both of us. I’m visiting her from 13-20 July—and I think Magdalena has her own travel plans starting (Saturday) 20 July. I think we’re safest if things go wrong to make sure we do the release in the middle of that week. But it sounds like we’re still heatedly coding toward this release, so I’d like to take stock of what we can complete just now—and reset the Refrigeration period, also perhaps scale back on some maybe too ambitious things we thought we could feasibly complete so we can properly refrigerate. Thoughts? What’s the state of the dev branch just now? Also, I will be flying to Utrecht to arrive for DH2019 on 6 July. Hugh -- I have 1. created a 'nest_TEI_deprecate_teiCorpus' branch 2. updated the <desc> for <TEI> (English only) 3. added <TEI> to model.resourceLike 4. begun the process of updating the prose HOWEVER, 1) I can't really test it well, because the build process is broken. But what I can easily test, it seems to be fine. 2) I have run out of time and have not even proofread the changes I made to DS and CC. Over to you ...

Martina (and all) -- where are we on the big nesting TEI issue? I had planned to spend my TEI time between now and release working on that, so at this release <TEI> would be able to nest, and the documentation would include this possibility (whether we deprecated use of <teiCorpus> now or not). But a) I'm not sure I'm clear to move ahead on that; and b) I'm wondering if I shouldn't be spending time on the Stylesheets issues instead? I realize that means bumping nesting-<TEI> another 6 months (which would make *me* sad), but that may not be a bad thing if we're still waiting for LR's post to TEI-L and the fallout therefrom.

Next OxGarage release

Dear all, as proposed at the f2f I’d like to do a OxGarage release soonish. Au contraire to what I said at the f2f I’m now thinking of making this version 3.0.0 (rather than 2.11.0). This release is merely to update the current stable (master) branch (after a year) to catch up with the recent developments in the dev branch, and to fix the versioning which currently states 2.10.0 in the VERSION file but 1.0.0 on the GitHub releases. I no one speaks up, I’ll do so in the next days/week. Best Peter

build issues with exemplars

Dear all, we had an efficient Stylesheets meeting today and tackled issue #375 which I think we fixed. (NB, the Stylesheets were not flagged as broken but the issue only surfaced in the subsequent Guidelines builds.) Yet, the Guidelines build is still broken due to another issue with the exemplars (I believe) we introduced in [1]. The tei_simplePrint.odd does feature multiple <elementSpec> with the same @ident and relies on the ODD processing to resolve these properly. But it seems the ODD processing now(?) duplicates some of the information, leading to the error message "reference to undefined pattern „att.global.rendition.attribute.rendition““. I do not know what technology we should use to meet, but I think the plan is for Peter to review the recent build breakage that was caused by, what, #375 or #239? If I haven't heard otherwise from folks I will look on Google Hangouts for y'all in a bit over half an hour. (We could just use Skype, BTW, as there will be very few of us -- SB, MS, PS, MH? are the only confirmations I've had.)

mysterious new validation error in ODD-generated Relax NG XML schema

Dear Council, Are any of you seeing mysterious problems with ODD-generated schemas since we returned from DC? I'm not sure what's going on here, but a schema that was functioning on my project files in the first week of May--a schema that I have in no way altered--is suddenly today refusing to validate, with a bizarre ISO-Schematron error pointed at a line that makes no sense at all. When I try to generate a new version of the schema, the error appears again pointing at a completely different line. I've written up the problem to the oXygen-user mailing list to see what they advise. My message with more details on the errors, with links to my files is below. It is posted on my GitHub repo and shared with my project team, and other members of my team worked with it in the past few weeks. I have not edited the schema that my team using since that date. Today one of my team members alerted me that she was seeing a strange error, and I confirmed locally that this is on the Relax NG schema. The error reads: Description Effective boolean value is not defined for a sequence of two or more items starting with a boolean Severity Fatal System ID https://digitalmitford.github.io/DM_documentation/MitfordODD/out/mitfordODD… Main validation file /Users/elisa/Downloads/OVWalksInTheCountryTHECOWSLIPBALL.xml <http://users/elisa/Downloads/OVWalksInTheCountryTHECOWSLIPBALL.xml> Engine name ISO Schematron Start location line: 4996, column: 0 Here is another wrinkle to the problem. In attempting to debug, I generated a new RNG schema from the source ODD to see if that would make a difference. Interestingly, it did, with this effect: On attempting to validate a project XML file, I saw the same message about the effective boolean value, only this time it pointed to a different line in the RNG (not 4996, but 5151). In neither of these cases was the code on these lines at all meaningful or related to the reported ISO Schematron error. Line 4996 is the blank line below after defining the element binaryObject. <define name="teibinaryObject"> <element name="binaryObject"> <text/> <ref name="teiatt.global.attributes"/> <ref name="teiatt.media.attributes"/> <ref name="teiatt.timed.attributes"/> <ref name="teiatt.typed.attributes"/> ... </define> The other line was similarly not about making a boolean test of any kind. I do not understand what could be causing these problems, particularly since the schema was behaving normally two weeks ago. I cannot seem to generate a working schema now due to this strange ISO-Schematron error that keeps flagging different lines of my Relax NG document. Ah. That would make sense! Change in the stylesheets ... bitten by that circularity again. The ref/@target of that change to the stylesheets at the pull request we accepted at https://github.com/TEIC/Stylesheets/commit/5e6c445b1dbe92c2d3d30ef0bfa95127… just uses the @target in xhtml:a/@xhtml:href when we might need to sanitise it for things EPUB can't handle? Sounds like the @target is used in an xpath somewhere in the conversion to EPUB where it being a fragmentary identifier causes a problem. Does anyone have any suggestions why commit: https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/commit/672a64aa68080154242a8c27e19644a88afb9e8a and/or https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/commit/a5892a7bbbf8212eb3f66137790c5708bb64dd7b which are changes to the <desc> of <msFrag> seem to have broken Jenkins? https://jenkins.tei-c.org/job/TEIP5-dev/changes The errors from that build https://jenkins.tei-c.org/job/TEIP5-dev/242/parsed_console/ all seem to relate to the creation of EPUB and seem to cover every chapter of the Guidelines complaining about fragment identifiers.
