New Oxygen and Oxygen plugin

Hi all, We just got notification from Radu that Oxygen 25 will be coming out soon with incompatibilities which will break the plugin functionality with a comment on this ticket yesterday: <https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/issues/2251> Then today I see that Oxygen 25 is already out. That means that anyone installing Oxygen 25 who is using EITHER the stable plugin OR the bleeding-edge version will have broken transformations until we get new versions out. Radu has very kindly sent me the new versions of the framework files which he has modified for Oxygen 25, and which will be backwards-compatible with Oxygen 21+, but not with older Oxygen versions. We currently claim that the plugin supports Oxygen 18.1+, but we will have to abandon support for anything before 21. I presume this is OK with everyone; I can't really see any alternative, other than spawning multiple plugin versions for old Oxygen versions, which is impractical. So I propose to make those changes this morning. If anyone objects, please let me know; if anyone would like to be involved, so there's someone else on Council who has their eye on the plugin, give me a shout. I'll wait an hour or two before changing anything so we can do it together if that's useful for anyone. Within the next few hours there should be a new bleeding edge plugin build to test, and I'll first test it with my existing Oxygen 24 then update my 24 to 25 and see if that breaks anything. This is very last-minute, which is not ideal, so I hope nothing does break. Refrigeration phase

Dear all, This is a reminder that we have entered the refrigeration phase. This is a phase where we pay special attention to open pull requests and issues that we want to bring into the upcoming release. Please do not commit major changes to the schema (except if they have been tested in a branch, e.g. ab), changes in prose are still ok. Freeze is on Thursday, Oct 20. Freeze means that the release branches are created and that only the release techs should commit to the release branches. The milestone “Guidelines 4.5.0” has 62 open issues (https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+milestone%3A%22Gu…) and “Stylesheets 7.54.0” has 15 open issues https://github.com/TEIC/Stylesheets/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+milestone… . Please take a look at the list of issues and remove those from the milestone, that you will not implement within the next couple of days. OxGarage repo archived

Dear Councilists, as announced at Newcastle Anne and I were taking last steps towards TEIGarage: * cleaned up issues in the OxGarage repo (at lease two of them were Stylesheets issues so we transferred them there) * added a deprecation notice to the OxGarage GUI * added a deprecation notice to the OxGarage GitHub README * added a deprecation notice to the OxGarage Dockerhub README * deployed TEIGarage at https://teigarage.tei-c.org * … and finally archived the OxGarage repo So, for the time being we might keep both old OxGarage and new TEIGarage running in parallel. Yet, if no errors show up we should simply replace OxGarage with TEIGarage in the near future. Have a great weekend Peter

Updated Travel Reimbursement form

Dear All, Those who need to submit a reimbursement form should use the one at https://tei-c.org/tei_travel_form/. The procedures for reimbursement are outlined here: https://wiki.tei-c.org/index.php?title=Travel_Reimbursement_Procedures_for_… (yes, it’s on the wiki). There isn’t a US State Department rate for Newcastle, so may I suggest we pick Glasgow? It seems to me roughly in line with what I paid, when I paid for meals. That would be: Breakfast Lunch Dinner $12 $20 $33 Per Diem is for the days of the Council/Board meetings only, not for the whole conference. You’re better off sending me the form and receipts in digital formats. There is a mailing address on the form, but it will probably be quicker if you submit things electronically. Bounce Messages

Looks like all of us who use Gmail had our list membership suspended this morning due to excessive bounces. I’ve gone in an un-suspended folks, but this is probably another signal that we need to consider alternatives. Maybe even different modalities. Modern email is a shitshow, and Gmail may have just decided it didn’t want to deliver a few messages from the ADHO mail server. Note that if you use Gmail, you’ve probably missed some messages. I might suggest we copy any important communications to Slack. And maybe talk about how to proceed in Newcastle. Hugh

Conf Tool feature request

Dear Council colleagues, I’m passing on a request from a junior scholar. I wholeheartedly support this person’s desire for a “Mx” option in ConfTool. Dr. and Prof are great gender-neutral options for people with PhDs and/or academic appointments but non-binary folks without those privileges don’t have an option that reflects their identity. I'm very pleased to hear about your goals to make TEI more gender-inclusive. On that note, I'm not sure how involved you are with the Newcastle conference, but when I was submitting my abstract it required an honorific and only gave Ms, Mr, Dr, and Prof as options. I had the same issue with the same conference tool when submitting to SHARP for this year, but they were able to add a custom option after I asked about it. It would be great if Mx was an option going forward! I only bring this up to you now because you mentioned gender inclusivity as a goal of TEI. Can we leave an action item for the next program committee, so they are prompted to add a custom non-binary option to our deployment of ConfTool? Since conference registration is happening now, it might be nice to do it for this year, if it’s possible. Deprecation for ident changes?

Hi all, OUr LEMDO project got bitten by an unexpected change in the latest TEI release: we have a customization which deletes the Schematron rule which disallows nested ab elements, because we believe they should be nestable. However, the @ident of that rule was changed in the release, so suddenly our customization failed and a pile of files were suddenly invalid. No problem to figure out and fix, but it does show that changing an @ident should be subject to deprecation warnings if we aim not to catch people out with a release. I don't know how that could be done, though. We noticed a bunch of other unexpected changes too, and I was a bit surprised because I subscribe to the bleeding-edge Oxygen plugin so that I get plenty of warning of changes landing in the dev branches. However, I think what has been happening is that a lot of changes have been taking place in feature branches, and then languishing there until the last-minute mad scramble to land them in dev and release branches before the release date. That means that the value of the bleeding-edge plugin as an advance testing mechanism is diminished. Again, not sure what could be done about that. altIdent screw up

Oh BLEEP! I failed to change the manual deprecation date from "2022-07-14" to "2022-10-21" on the "deprecate_altIdent_in_non-ODD_places" constraint specification (in file P5/Source/Specs/altIdent.xml). Now that we have published 4.4.0 with the “wrong” date I see 3 possible courses of action: 1. Leave things as is, and just act on the deprecation on 2022-07-14. Yes, that makes the deprecation period pretty short, but who uses `<altIdent>` anyway? 2. Do nothing in July. For the _next_ release (call it 4.5.0, as that is likely what it will be) reset the valid until date from 2022-07-14 to a date a few months after the 4.5.0 release. 3. Issue a point release (4.4.1) now that corrects the date to the desired 2022-10-21.

faster testing

One of the reasons the test procedure in Stylesheets/Test2/ is dramatically faster than the one in Stylesheets/Test/ is that it is, by default, run in parallel.[1,2] You can also ask the make command to run multiple jobs at once. The switches that control this are --jobs= and --output-sync=. I just tried an experiment, comparing how long it took to run make vs make --jobs=7 --output-sync=lines. (I chose 7 because my system has 8 threads, and I wanted to have some CPU available. What little I have found on the web seems to suggest I may as well go ahead and use 8.) The result was faster, although not even close to 7 times faster: down to 03:32 from 04:36. I compared the output of the 2 commands, and they were identical. On GNU/Linux, at least, the nproc command will tell you how many threads are available. Thus using the command $ make --jobs=`nproc 2>/dev/null || echo 1` -Oline seems to make sense to me. (-O is shorthand for --output-sync=.) It is also possible to get the Makefile to do that on its own. My first thought is that might not be such a good idea, because you may want to run with --jobs=1 in order to force error messages into the right order. (I.e., in case -Oline wasn’t good enough.) I ran the experiment again, this time using --jobs=8 and getting screen captures of the process monitor roughly 40 s after the make command started.[3] The timing results were very similar (down to 03:36 from 04:36), but the order of output lines was different. (Same output; i.e., they were identical after sorting and removing timestamps.) So I think anyone running the Stylesheets test process would do well to use the --jobs switch. You could use any of * -j 8 # if you know you have 8 threads, e.g. * --jobs=`nproc` # if you know the nproc command works on your system * -j `nproc 2> /dev/null || echo 1` # if there is a chance nproc fails, so it defaults to '1' Martina — could you either update the notes we have about updating P5 subset, or remind me where they are and I will? Thanks. Notes [1] ant test runs them in parallel; if you want them in series (likely because the order of messages was confusing when run in parallel) use ant testSeries. [2] There are other reasons, like it is written to be less redundant, and the JVM is only spun up once, rather than once for every test. Oxygen plugin

Hi all, I'd like to draw Council's attention to these two tickets: <https://github.com/TEIC/oxygen-tei/issues/54> <https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/issues/2251> where two things have happened: 1. As usual, we were caught unawares when Oxygen released an update which broke functionality in the TEI Oxygen plugin version that we maintain. Oxygen maintain their own fork of the plugin repo and up to now, they've been making any necessary changes silently before an Oxygen release; then we realize that something is broken and struggle to catch up. I now have a pull request that I've asked Radu Coravu from Oxygen to review before I merge it, updating the included libs for transformations to take account of log4j changes. For those new to the situation, it's a bit complicated: the Oxygen folks only care about ensuring that the version of the plugin that ships with Oxygen works with the Oxygen version it ships with. However, we have different requirements, because we attempt to maintain support for older versions of Oxygen, so that those who cannot upgrade for some reason are still able to get up-to-date versions of P5, the Stylesheets, and the transformations in their older Oxygen. This means that we can't simply adopt any of the changes that the Oxygen folks make directly into our own branch; that would remove functionality for earlier Oxygen versions. So we have to try to merge the changes carefully. When the pull request is checked and merged, then our bleeding-edge version of the plugin will build, and those of us using it (which I hope is a reasonable subset of the Council) are able to test and make sure nothing is badly broken. We don't have a formal testing procedure, though, especially for older versions of Oxygen, because few of us run older versions. If the bleeding edge version is deemed OK, then Council will need to release the corresponding stable version using the procedure that's normally followed when we do a P5/Stylesheets release. There is a degree of urgency here because currently, anyone who is subscribed to our plugin and has upgraded their Oxygen to the current version will not be able to use any of the transformations, as Laurent discovered. 2. Radu has kindly agreed to raise issues on our plugin repo when they make changes in future, so we can try to avoid this happening again. I think I'm the only one who watches this repo at the moment, which is not really ideal. @docLang chaining issues

And here are my opinions on these questions: >p5subset.xml has all the languages (as it does); customization1.odd specifies >@docLang="en" customization2.odd, which points to customization1.odd, specifies >@docLang="it" What language should the output schema use? Schemas compiled against customization1 will see help popups in English, and those compiled against customization2 will see them in Italian. That is, assuming neither ODD has done anything to remove the relevant components. The languages available from a compiled ODD should presumably be managed in the same way as anything else. So if I delete an English <gloss> in my customization, and then compile that to use as a basis for a further customization, the compiled version will no longer have an English gloss to use, so specifying @docLang='en' won't produce anything. In general specifying @docLang only expresses an output preference; it has nothing to do with determining what components are available from a compiled version of the ODD. 2. Imagine: >customization1.odd modifies an element, replacing the English gloss with >something different. customization2.off specifies @docLang="es" Where should the >gloss be taken from in the output of the chain? I think I already answered that. If "customisation2.off" is using a compiled version of customization1.odd then the spanish gloss will be taken from that, if it's there. >3. Should it be part of the system that you can specify a series of languages in >order of preference, from which text will be taken if something is not available >in the main docLang? Seems like an over-complication. There is a canonical language in which ODD glosses are written, which is currently labelled "en" (unless and until the TEI becomes a purely Chinese -- say -- project). So it is not unreasonable to say if @docLang requests a language that's not available (for whatever reason), a version using the canonical language is the fallback. If you really want to I suppose you could supply multiple values for @docLang to indicate acceptable languages, and then choose whichever comes first on the list, but this seems like over-egging the pudding to me.

TEI Plugin bug: can you help test?`

Hi all, Oxygen 24.1 ships with Saxon 10 instead of Saxon 9, and our oxygen-tei plugin is expecting Saxon 9. I noticed this when unable to run ODD to RNG transformations with the bleeding-edge plugin in Oxygen this morning. I've raised a bug: https://github.com/TEIC/oxygen-tei/issues/54 and committed a fix which works in Oxygen 24.1, but I'd like to confirm that it doesn't break anything in earlier versions. Out of memory on P5 tests

Hi all, Today, my Jenkins started to fail on the TEIP5-Test-dev build with an out-of-memory error when running RNV, which I can also reproduce on my desktop: ... java -jar ../Utilities/lib/trang.jar testplus.rng testplus.rnc xmllint --noent --dropdtd testplus.xml | rnv testplus.rnc stdin:1:0: error: out of memory error: invalid input make[1]: *** [Makefile:78: testplus.special] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/mholmes/tei/TEI/P5/Test' make: *** [Makefile:195: test] Error 2 The failure is on line 78 of the Test/Makefile, and it's when testplus.xml is processed through xmllint and passed to rnv for validation against its matching rnc file. It looks like Peter's Jenkins is not suffering from this, while Raff's has not run the job since last August, so something else is problematic there. Can those of you who run the docker instance try running the tests and see what you get? I suspect that the testplus.xml file has just somehow edged over a size threshold and we can work around it by throwing a bit of memory at xmllint or at rnv, but I'd like to get a bit more info first. Latest TCW 32 up for reading

I have now pushed up 2 new files to the Documentation/TCW/ repo: * tcw32.xslt = A driver or wrapper XSLT program that runs Stylesheets/profiles/default/html5/to.xsl and over-rides the templates for processing <egXML>. * tcw32.css = CSS to go with the output of above. I have used it by inserting it directly into the output HTML using the $cssInlineFiles parameter to the stylesheets. I have also put the (current) generated output up on my basement server<https://bauman.zapto.org/~syd/temp/4TEICouncil/tcw32.html> for y’all. The differences in the output of examples are: * Completely different indentation algorithm * Box with example scrolls iff it is too wide * Different colors * Mostly like oXygen * More subdued quotes around attr values * Used the oXygen XSLT-element color for non-TEI (i.e., Schematron) elements I do not know that the Documentation/TCW/ repo is the right place to keep these things, especially if we convert this from TCW 32 to TEI U6 (or whatever). But for now it makes the most sense …

Re: TEI ticket #2217<https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/issues/2217> I have scanned the entire TEI/, Stylesheets/, Documentation/, and oxygen-tei/ repos (not to mention lots of old directories I have lying around) for occurrences of “Guidelines-pdf” and “pdf-complete” and have not found any (except those in the Makefile to be changed). Oher than checking with the TEIGarage folks, is there anywhere else (particularly in documentation) that I should be looking?

Dear Council, In our last Council call we agreed that due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation we will organize another SVF2F (short virtual face-to-face meeting) in March or April. We have a Stylesheets meeting scheduled for Thu 25 Nov at 18:30Z. That day is a major holiday in the USA. Do we want to a) hold meeting anyway, b) cancel, or c) try to reschedule? As for me, I am OK with holding the meeting as scheduled (i.e., (a)). Just means I have to do some cooking earlier in the day. (I will also probably leave at 20:00Z sharp to change clothes and get on the road to my sister’s, where I am due before 22:00Z.)

I was pondering https://twitter.com/TEI_Pelican/status/1436279338182189056 in which it's claimed that the tag <ellipsis> doesn't feature in any TEI documents in the wild so far dredged up by the pelican, when one of the students in this year's TEI course in Tours asked how to deal with a manuscript like the attached: its a play script showing just one actor's part, the horizontal lines representing other actors' speeches. A real life case for <ellipsis> I think.

DST stands for different stylesheets timing

We agreed to move the Thu 28 Oct Stylesheets meeting to Thu 04 Nov. Problem is, we did not agree on a time, and unlike 28 Oct, where the “usual time” works (as [1]), by Thu 04 Nov Europe has fallen back to standard time, but US & Canada have not, meaning our currently scheduled times are [2]. At least Elisa would miss most of it if we leave it at [2]; and although I would not miss it, for me earlier is probably better because I will be waking up at 03:00 localtime to attend Declarative Amsterdam. Would folks be willing to change it to the “usual time” for the North Americans, i.e. [3]? (We can’t really push it out another week, as we have a regular meeting on Thu 11 Nov, by which time North America has fallen back to match Europe.) Ticket assignments and Councilors-elect

Elli & Sabine — First, welcome aboard! Second, I am sending this directly to you because I do not know if you have been added to the Council mailing list yet. Some background: One of our major tasks is to address “tickets”, issues raised and pull requests posted to our GitHub repositories. This means you need to have an account on GitHub, and someone needs to add your account to our repositories. The sooner the better, IMHO. Every month one Councilor volunteers to sift through all the newly posted tickets to the two main repos (TEI & Stylesheets) and assign them to various people to be in charge of handling them. This person may also assign a priority label, thus the name of this process is called “ticket triage”. I am the ticket triage person for October and am a bit behind schedule. 🙂 Everyone — Unless someone tells me otherwise, I am planning to include Elli & Sabine in the list of people who get assigned tickets. Yes, they may not be up to speed to address any for a few months, but if there are good tickets for someone new to the process or tickets in their areas of expertise, it seems to make sense to put them in the pool. On the same note, unless Jessica or Meaghan jumps up and says “No, please give me more tickets! I do not have enough work to try to get done in 2 months, more, more!” I do not plan to assign any new ones to either of them unless it is exactly up her alley. (Meg has 9 current open issues assigned, Jessica 14.)

Old TEI framework in Oxygen

Hi all, At the last Stylesheets meeting, we happened to notice that the current Oxygen is shipping with an old TEI framework, so I raised an issue on the Oxygen forum: <https://www.oxygenxml.com/forum/topic23434.html> This hasn't got any response at all, which is a bit unusual for the Oxygen guys. I'm wondering what the next step should be. Options might be to raise an issue on the oxygen-tei GitHub repo and ping specific people such as Radu or Alex, or perhaps to email George directly. I think it's something Council should decide on, though. For all I know, they just forgot to rebuild the plugin before their release, and there's nothing to worry about.
