Dear Council, Greetings from Japan! I'm in Kyushu today (Monday March 10), on invitation of Kiyonori Nagasaki, to speak about the TEI at Fukuoka University, and I won't be back home until the end of this week. We spoke about this on Slack, but I just wanted to make sure we formalized the arrangement. We will plan to hold the monthly Council call next week on Tuesday March 18. What is a base ODD?

Hi all, The ATOP group has been grappling with the issue of ODD chaining, and in particular, how to determine, starting from a customization ODD to process and following its chain of precursors, how to know when you reach a base ODD and don't have to go any further. This is easy if the ultimate base ODD is p5subset, and that is indeed the default. However, it's perfectly possible that you don't want anything at all from P5, you just want to customize a base ODD that you've already created. One obvious sign of a base ODD is that there is no <schemaSpec> element -- which is the case for p5subset -- but we know that many base ODDs in the wild DO have a `<schemaSpec>` element, and it also seems intuitive that if you're creating a schema specification, you should use a `<schemaSpec>` element. So we've arrived at a definition of a base ODD, which we believe is testable; it goes like this (adapted from our meeting notes): EITHER the ODD has no `<schemaSpec>` element, OR it has a <schemaSpec> with no `@source` (meaning that the source would default to p5subset), BUT there are no `<*Ref>` children of that `<schemaSpec>` invoking content from p5subset so there is no need to retrieve it. This is based on the assumption that if you use any `<*Ref>` element at the base level (i.e. as a direct child of `<schemaSpec>`), that constitutes a call to retrieve something from p5subset; but any such `<*Ref>` at a lower level must be referring to what is already in the schema (either because it's locally defined, or because it was brought in by a top-level `<moduleRef>`, `<elementRef>`, etc.). So my question is: does all this make sense to you all? If so, and we proceed on this basis, then P5 could probably use some more explanation of what a base ODD is, and how it fits into the chaining process. I should also say that current approaches to ODD chaining with the current Stylesheets involve pre-compiling any ODD which is earlier in the chain, so that it constitutes a .processedodd file (see <https://teic.github.io/PDF/howtoChain.pdf> section 4), but we would like ATOP to be able to do all that automatically, so that all you do is specify the source for your customization, and the processor can construct the entire chain and compile everything in sequence. We will definitely miss you in Council but we know we'll see you again next year in working on TEI Lite2! We also look forward to welcoming Ulrike and Martin, who officially begin with the Council in January! Ulrike and Martin, you should now be added to this Council e-mail listserv, and this is one place where we'll make formal announcements. You are both most welcome to join us at the December meeting, though this is optional and we'll understand if you can't make it until the start of your terms in January! As for meetings from January 2025 onward, we need to schedule them! Council has been meeting in the second full week of every month for 90-minute sessions, and I am hoping to set a regular date and time that might hold through April or May this spring. TEI Lite 2.0 Task force

Dear Elisa and Council, Following up on our discussions in the F2F meeting in Buenos Aires I would like to request establishing a task force to create a new, substantially changed revision of the TEI Lite. As agreed in BA, task force members will be as follows: Helena Bermúdez-Sabel Gustavo Fernandez Riva Martina Scholger Magdalena Turska As for the organization of work, we are planning to meet in person in January 2025, in my house in Poland. Best regards, Magdalena Scope of the work and planned deliverables TEI Lite 2.0 task force is dedicated to the creation of the new TEI Lite schema and corresponding Guidelines with extended examples section. These will be accompanied by implementations for the new functionalities required for the schema processing and Guidelines publication. Rationale Motivations for the new version of the TEI Lite are several. First, its original dates back to 1996, later followed by a series of updates varying in scope. The last substantial revision was made in 2006, at a time when both the technologies supporting XML processing were not as developed, and, more importantly, consensus regarding publication and interoperability of TEI-encoded texts was completely lacking and implementation praxis varied hugely. Therefore TEI Lite (and TEI) Guidelines for the most part pay no heed to processing and publishing concerns, in particular rarely addressing encoding strategies for composite, heterogeneous collections, focusing rather on the "archive" function of the format, where effectively all information is injected into a single TEI resource. The task force's intention is to expand the horizon of the TEI Lite Guidelines, to discuss recommended data modeling, organization and processing practices for a broad range of real life uses. Especially the processing part will make use of the TEI Processing Model, non-existent yet when TEI Lite was last updated. Second, despite decades of efforts from the TEI community, the standard is still too often perceived as prohibitively complex, and even the presence of TEI Lite with its reduced set of elements did not amend the situation. One reason may be the fragmentary character of existing resources to learn TEI from, both in terms of structure and examples provided. Particularly the latter in the Guidelines are usually missing the broader context, from the facsimile of the original source to the complete TEI document to which they might belong, therefore making it impossible for the users to analyze the complete picture the Guidelines try to portray. Therefore, TEI Lite aims to extend the base of full encoding examples as well as illustrate remaining fragmentary ones with a broader context, from facsimile images, through the editorial process, to a proposed final presentation. This will be achieved through extensive use of graphic and other media (e.g. screencasts or animations), not relying solely on textual descriptions of phenomena discussed. Finally, one of the common concerns with the TEI standard is its increasing idiosyncrasy, for the most part a consequence of the inability to express contextually diverse content models for the same element. TEI Lite 2.0 task force intends to propose a syntax and implementation for that problem, together with the reorganization of a number of elements. We hope that the results of this effort will pave the way for the new, P6, version of the TEI.

I started working on the teidata.version = teidata.version.unicode | teidata.version.semver | teidata.version.calver | teidata.whatever system today. (In a branch I have not committed, let alone pushed.) Less than halfway through the process I ran into a (moderately embarrassing) problem. It turns out calVer<https://calver.org/> is not a calendar-based version numbering system as we had assumed during our recent discussions. It is rather a cheerleading document in favor of calendar-based versioning in general, with both a breakdown of the potential components such a version number might use, and a list of specific projects that use a calendar-based version numbering system (along with the pattern of aforementioned components that project uses). My first reaction is I have no idea what we should do about this. My second reaction is I can easily scope out a range of options, as follows. 1. Do nothing with calVer — drop it from the list of TEI datatypes-to-be. 2. Go whole-hog: For every system described by calVer, create a TEI datatype that validates it. E.g., the datatype for the Ubuntu system would be defined with something like <dataRef name="token" restriction="([4-9]|[1-9][0-9]|[1-9][0-9][0-9])\.(0[[0-9]|1[0-2])(\.[0-9]+)?"/> Datatypes could be named flatly, e.g. teidata.version.ubuntu, or could be named hierarchicly, e.g. teidata.version.calendar.ubuntu. 3. Something in between. (E.g., calVer divides systems into case studies, notables, and others; maybe do #2 but only for the case study ones.) I really don’t like #1, because, in general, this is a great way to do version numbering. I encourage everyone to scan the major portions of the calVer document, if not read the whole thing.

I have created a new branch in the TEIC/TEI repo called “cmc”. It is a squashed fork of the TEI-CMC-SIG/TEI branch “cmc-features”. What this means (presuming I have done this right) is that most, if not all, further work on the new CMC chapter should be performed in the new branch. Harald and Michael do not have write access to that branch (I don’t think), so if they wish to commit a change they may have to either make a requests of someone who does, or commit to their TEI-CMC-SIG/TEI, in which case we would need to merge. Because there have been some updates to other parts of P5 (although none to CMC itself) in the past few weeks, I have generated new outputs (see below). monthly ticket triage

I performed ticket triage this morning. All issues and pull requests in the TEI and Stylesheets repos that are < 2 years old now have assignees except the Stylesheets issue I opened yesterday (Documentation file teixsl.xml needs updating #665<https://github.com/TEIC/Stylesheets/issues/665>). This issue could be a pretty sizeable task, since that document has not had any significant updates since 2015. That said, it is not huge: the document is only a bit over 2,500 words long. It has 6 or 7 major divisions and some 45 paragraphs. In principle I do not mind doing this myself. But my plate is already pretty full. Maybe we could divide and conquer, or maybe someone who wants to review how the Stylesheets work (for users) just wants to take it on?

ATOP TF down one

Dear Council — I write to you with the concerning news that David Maus has decided to resign from the ATOP task force. I call this “concerning” rather than “sad” news because although it is sad for us (the remaining members) to lose David whom we both like and like working with, and sad for us (the TEI) to lose such an incredible talent, it is not really sad in the sense that David is not leaving for some horrible reason like he has decided that the digital humanities is a waste of time. Rather, David has decided to stop working on ATOP for reasons that I think we should be concerned about. The main reason for David’s departure is that he no longer believes that the task of writing an ODD processor is a feasible one. He spent some significant time and effort working on ATOP over the holiday break. While he made some progress, the chief result of his labors was frustration with the poor quality of the specification of ODD, namely the TEI Guidelines, specifically chapter 22, Documentation Elements<https://tei-c.org/Vault/P5/4.7.0/doc/tei-p5-doc/en/html/TD.html>. He believes that the poor quality of the specification makes a proper implementation impossible.[1] David also has a sense of frustration with TEI as an organization. The TEI Board has not gotten back to him on a potential collaboration, and it is taking us (the TEI Council) months and months to address some of the issues he has raised. While I share David’s frustration with the sluggishness of progress in the TEI-C, I also recognize that the work is being done by volunteers with real jobs. So I see both sides of this coin. Lastly, and in some sense most importantly, David just is not having fun doing ATOP work anymore. The good news is that David is still willing to help as an occasional as-needed consultant, and to pitch in with the jTEI publications we have already committed to. Furthermore, I am confident David will still be available as a resource to TEI when thorny Schematron issues come up. (He is one of the leading experts on Schematron, having written what many consider the premier Schematron processor in the world: SchXslt<https://schxslt.github.io/schxslt/>, which I call mausatron.) I do not intend to try to replace David immediately. The ATOP task force will work with just the three of us for a few months first, and then we will discuss as a group whether we want to expand or not. Note [1] He may well be right. While the remaining members of the task force do not currently share this belief, we do all believe we might very well agree with him after diving further into the nitty-gritty details of the ODD specification. We are actually somewhat worried that after a few more meetings we may also be throwing our arms up in despair.

time to fix, retire, or kill Test/

Trish & I are doing the p5subset → Stylesheets process. Most of our time has been spent handling Test/. I think it is just too cumbersome — the amount of time we (Council, collectively) spend wrangling with Test/ is likely by now much greater than the amount of time it saves by catching bugs early. I think we need to do one of three things, toot sweet: 1. Re-work the Test/Makefile so that the process is much easier: e.g., when comparisons are deferred, a shell script to perform them needs to be generated; this might be hard to impossible. 2. Stop using Test/, it is just not helpful enough to be worth it. Leave the directory in the repo so that we can use it when there is a particularly gnarly case, or when a human is not waiting for it, but remove it from the general test procedure we use, e.g. when generating p5subset for the Stylesheets repo. 3. Remove Test/ from the repo (and various instructions) entirely (and rename Test2/ to Test/ :-) My vote is for (2). I could be perhaps be talked into (3) reasonably easily; it would take some serious convincing to get me to vote for (1). P.S. BTW, Martin & I intended that we would do (3) when we developed Test2/. (I wanted to hang onto Test/, i.e. do (2), for awhile to ensure that everything tested by Test/ was also tested by Test2/.)

A little update

Dear council members, First of all, I hope you're thoroughly enjoying the conference in Paderborn! I wanted to write to you with a quick update on my situation (as far as Elisa hasn't already filled you in). The past months have been, well, hard work, but I'm happy to report all is well with our new little family. The twins were born on March 17, two months too soon, and we had to stay in the hospital for three weeks, but since taking them home they've been doing great. Enclosed a picture for those interested. Still, it's been quite demanding to take care of newborn twins (who would've thought?) and so far I haven't had a chance to recover from the burn-out symptoms I experienced right before (and during) my pregnancy. So when Elisa wrote to me proposing I extend my leave from Council, thus not only giving me some more time to recover but also giving someone else the chance to experience Council for a year, I considered it a good solution. I was indeed very happy to hear that Joey has been a wonderful addition to Council and I'm glad this solution worked out so well. This is not to say I miss you very much and I wish I could be there in Paderborn with you. Starting this week, the twins are going to daycare, giving me some much needed time to rest and get better. Some of our discussion has been about studying how librarians understand metadata (including those who don't use the TEI very much) in order to put forward a streamlined version of the teiHeader, I will say that Penn State's IT are good generous people, and Listserv a remarkably robust and well-maintained software used by many universities in the US--and the transfer work was entirely pleasant and remarkably easy as a result. Libraries had little to do with that development in particular. Curriculum is another matter--I agree that it would be lovely to connect the Big Ten with TEI, but I suspect the real bottleneck is faculty teaching undergraduates. Some of us do, but we're a patchy network I think. Markup theory and practice needs to be taught to more grad students for this to catch on as canonical in curricula, but I think it certainly does teach remarkably well and appeals to students for what you can make and build of it--as you say, a sort of "maker space." TCP is certainly an important project to celebrate for bringing institutions together with a common goal, and it certainly does make for a good starting point for discussions about TEI in academe. Why not rechristen Lite and All TEI200 and TEI600? TEI-All has not quite 600 elements, and a revised TEI Lite falls short of 200. But the names give you a good sense of scale. TEI600 has a lot of elements, and TEI 200 has quite a few. The names get you out of implicit and confusing value judgements about what is ‘lite’ or ‘simple’. It may sound too much like F150 or C300, but that’s another matter, and some might like it for that reason. I disagree a little with the comment that “the phrasing of 90% of the needs of 90% of the community” is “outdated”. Pareto distributions and other power laws are pretty universal in their application. “90 % of the needs of 90% of the users” is an excellent version of the 80/20 rule. If anything, progress over the past quarter century may mean that the rule applies even more now than it did when it was used in the preface to the first version of TEI Lite. I remember working on a moderately complex project some twenty years ago. It was SGML rather than XML, and validation told you that things didn’t work without telling you much about the where or what of the errors. It’s a mystery to me now how I got it to work, though I did. Since then, the access costs to working with any kind of XML have dropped sharply, and folks with very little previous experience can “ramp up” quickly to doing useful work. If you belong to that category of users, it’s probably a good idea to ask yourself whether you can solve your encoding problem within a space of 200 elements rather than 600, not to speak of adding your own customization. That takes us back to the Nobel Prize behavioural economist Richard Thayer, who argued that in most walks of life people make better decisions if given a limited number of standard choices, as long as they can opt out. We all like to think that our projects are special, but typically they are not that special. A friend of mine told me that in Medical School he learned that “when you hear hooves behind you think horses not zebras”. Physicians like “interesting cases”. Patients not so much. This is good advice much of the time, and especially for groups like the Technical Council. Any such group is likely to have a preponderance of geeks, and geeks are more interested in exciting, new, and technically challenging things. Steven Pinker in his recent book on writing has a whole chapter on the problem that the hardest thing for a writer is to imagine what the reader does not know. Geeks share this problem, and groups like the Technical Council need to remind themselves constantly about the need to countersteer and focus on what most users do or need most of the time. Ben Shneiderman observed that good software should have “low thresholds and high ceilings”. From the bread-and-butter perspective of a thriving TEI enterprise, lowering the threshold should remain a key goal. I’m not much of a TEI expert, but I am an expert on the attitudes and anxieties of the key user community of people in English departments and their neighbours. Quite a few years Jerry McGann equipped about TEI as an acronym for *terra incognita. *Alas, the quip may still apply. The TEI has man virtues, but preaching beyond the choir is not one of them. It would be a good idea for the Technical Council to apply the 80/20 rule in such a way that 80% of the work is done on lowering the thresholds. TEI-Publisher, the happy child of the TEI Simple project, has done a lot of good work on that front. But even there much of the documentation is not as successful as it might be in keeping mind what the reader does not know. I have on occasions argued for the need of a “Small Catechism” to accompany the “Grand Catechism” of the TEI Guidelines—a magnificent document in some ways but not reader-friendly in others. The most useful part of the Guidelines is Appendix C1—the easiest and quickest way to figure out where an element may or may not occur. Since Appendix must be based on a program, it should be possible and not very expensive to create a version that Is populated only by the most frequently used elements (TEI 200 or whatever you call it. >From one perspective you don’t this: it doesn’t tell you what you can’t get from the full version. Dear all, it’s only a few days until your/our meeting at Paderborn and I thought it high time to send you some Information! Your meeting room for Sun–Tue will be F0.550 (the nicest room in the building!) which is located directly on the ground floor next to the entrance of the Heinz-Nixdorf-Insitute (HNI) [1]. Since room numbers are boring I labelled it <hni:egXML> – watch out for other tag names as room labels! The room is equipped with two large screens and a projector and allows connecting via HDMI or Airplay or some other Android thing I’m not familiar with. More rooms are available for break out sessions. All the pre-conference workshops (Mon-Tue) will be held at the HNI, too, so you will have to have regular breaks since the coffee break catering is located directly next to your room. For Sunday, I will bring some coffee, tea, and biscuits directly to your room. The lunch breaks on Mon/Tue will be at the cafeteria free of charge for all conference participants (I hope you are all registered for the conference?) On Sunday, I recommend to order some food because there’s not much around the HNI. A nice place might be the Pader Café, though, wich is a 10min walk away and should serve some food on Sundays according to [2]. Sunday evening you’re invited to my place (6:30pm, is that ok?) – I hope the weather will be fine and we can have a barbecue, so please let me know about your dietary restrictions and/or preferences! Rahtz Prize Committee interest?

Greetings, Council! We need one representative from Council to serve on a little three-person committee to award the Rahtz Prize for TEI Ingenuity <https://tei-c.org/activities/rahtz-prize-for-tei-ingenuity/> for 2023: one from Council, one from Board, and one who won the award in a previous cycle. Apparently we have a proud tradition of always running late in the posted cycle--but we do need to get started quickly! I understand that the little committee needs to form and issue a call for applications, likely by early August and then start reviewing them to make a decision by the time of the TEI / MEC conference. This involves looking for applications, reviewing submissions and that we'll typically announce the winner at the TEI Conference in the Annual General Meeting. So long as you have not served on the committee 4 times already, you're eligible to represent Council. Are you interested in serving on the Rahtz committee to represent the Council? If so reply to this and let me know--probably in course of the next week--say before July 27, okay? I am willing to serve in this capacity but I wanted to ask the group first--I am also going to be crazy busy in August getting ready for my university classes (which start 21 August) and the Council F2F. I'd be super grateful for anyone with a more peaceful August schedule who is willing to serve on this committee! Magic removal time! OMG, I am so excited. But I have to prep slides for tomorrow, no time to do this now. Thus I am writing some notes here. See https://tei-c.org/Vault/P5/4.6.0/doc/tei-p5-doc/en/html/ref-TEI.html. Note that there is a proper namespace declaration in both examples. How the BLEEP did it get there? We cannot put a namespace declaration for the empty namespace on an element in an <eg:egXML> (unless it is on an element that has an explicit prefix), because its contents need to be in the eg: namespace. The answer is that there is magic in the Stylesheets.[1] Now take a look at https://www.wwp.neu.edu/outreach/seminars/miami_2023-07/presentations/manus…. The source for that slide uses <egMarkup>, an element that has the same kind of namespace specification restriction. So how did the namespace declaration get there? Simple. So simple I am annoyed at myself for not thinking of this long ago. In the source it is not a namespace declaration, it is an xmlns attribute in a namespace. Thus it makes it to the Stylesheet as an attribute node and can be processed like any other attribute. The special case in the stylesheet that processes that slide is simple, straightforward, and easy to document: “An attribute in the duck: namespace has its prefix stripped off before it is rendered in the output”. Note [1] Particularly in Stylesheets/common/verbatim.xsl, starting at roughly line 463.

We have not heard from Torsten Schaßan or anyone else from the MS-SIG on 2214<https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/issues/2214>. I am going to suggest that we take the following actions. * Politely decline his PR<https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/pull/2423> — that content model will not do what anyone wants. * Merge sydb_2214 in. Even if it is not exactly what the MS-SIG wants, it is a step in the right direction. * IF the MS-SIG wants <msPart> and <msFrag> to intermingle with the other four elements (<msContents>, <physDesc>, <history>, and <additional>) we should push back against the idea. I am not saying we should not do it under any circumstances, but I honestly believe we (the MS description workgroup back in 2005) designed that part of the content model because, as JC affirmed in Guelph, it makes sense that way; whereas I think we designed the part of the content model for those other four elements that way because it was easy on us. * Develop a written policy for application of the Takeda Strategy that says, essentially, at 2–4 particles we simply expand the desired structure in PureODD [see below for what that looks like but in RNC, not PureODD], but at 5+ particles we loosen the grammar-based content model (RELAX NG) and add further constraints with the rule-based schema (ISO Schematron). * Note: The above policy need not be applied to an <interleave> with only 1 particle, as that is exactly the same as that 1 particle without an <interleave>. 🙂 * This, of course, is applicable during the time period before we get <tei:interleave> working. (I think, BTW, that if we want to do this right the Stylesheets should generate proper DTD code, if possible, no matter how many particles there are. But that can be discussed later on the ticket(s) for <tei:interleave>.) Seems to me writing the PureODD for 1–3 is pretty easy, and we already have an example of doing so for 4, so copying & modifying it should not be hard. But 5 is essentially unmanageable, and I don’t even want to consider 6+. (Note, BTW, that speed is not a concern — jing validates against the 5-element version in < 0.1 s. I compared running 100 iterations of jing using the 4-element version and the 5-element version. The change in real time was 5.2 s to 6.5 s; the change in user time was 7.8 s to 8.8 s. That was using RNC, so each iteration had to convert the compact syntax to XML syntax first.) Here is what an interleaves of 2–5 elements looks like expanded to be usable by XML DTD language. Readers of my personal blog at https://foxglove.hypotheses.org (if there are any) will know that I have been banging on about this very topic for the last few weeks; others are cordially invited to give said blog a quick glance, just in case it's of interest to you too. And if anyone cares to put their head above the parapet and confess to sharing my concerns, or has already thought through and solved the whole problem, then I would like to meet you!

Possible roundtable on TEI+LOD for Making LINCS conference in Guelph

Hi TEI Council, As some of you are going to be appearing in Guelph for the TEI Council meeting which follows on from the Making LINCS conference (and then after the DH at Guelph Summer Workshops), and then for some of us having a LEAF-VRE project meeting! (I'm going to be around in Guelph from 4-17, then visiting my parents who live in Waterloo before flying home.) As such Susan Brown asked if we might have a roundtable or similar in the Making LINCS conference talking about how Linked Open Data now works so much better in the TEI. There have been a lot of developments (e.g. with <standOff>, <annotation> <annotationBlock> etc.) in the TEI. I think some of the people doing LOD but who have passing familiarity with TEI might still think of it as TEI P4 or earlier, so it might be good to bring them up to date. Say a roundtable session with a bit of show-and-tell point to all the neat new things TEI can do to record LOD. I'd happily chair and be a bit of a respondent, write up an overall abstract, etc. I'm hoping that Diane and Connie will volunteer (Diane indeed already has!), but it would be good to get a couple of current Council members depending on when people are arriving. (e.g. we could ask to be scheduled late Saturday or early Sunday and it wouldn't take too much time out of the Council meeting. I know Janelle indicated she might be available, but I didn't know when others were arriving and wanted to make sure to give everyone the opportunity. (There may be some for whom it would be useful but low-stakes CV entries?) We are frozen. New branches (TEI/release-4.6.0 and Stylesheets/release-7.55.0) have been created. (Each was created from a dev branch for which I had just issues git pull.) Pushes and merges to these two branches should only be made by the release techs. (SB, HC, JT.)

roma + i18n: why are we waiting?

The latest release of roma (Mar 13, 0.3.1) is what you get if you try romabeta.tei-c.org<http://romabeta.tei-c.org> today. This still doesn't have any i18n features and is thus useless to the non-anglophone. The prototype at https://romajsdev.netlify.app/ claims to be using roma 1.0.0 but that hasn't been released yet. When may we expect a change? It's doing my head in to have two beta versions to choose from...

Who is currently responsible for the TEI website? I assume someone is! I thought it might be the Board, but the website does not currently provide any information on Board meetings since 2020. By dint of snooping around on the mailing lists, I discovered that on the 17th inst. the Board had a meeting at which maintenance of the website did feature as an agenda item. But I have no idea beyond that because the minutes of Board meetings have not been visible for the last 3 years, as aforesaid. I ask because I am trying to put together an archive of TEI Council minutes, and am having a lot of trouble locating anything but Wordpress pages. I don't mind converting these to a better archival format (hmm, how about TEI?) but for some reason curl won't play ball with the website (or vice versa). best wishes Lou

Not sure whose problem this is, but the built in ODD to RELAXNC processor (part of the oXygen TEI framework) at release 25 of oxygen editor still seems to be using a component that needs updating. I’ve had a crazy week getting ready to leave (and am now in transit) for a 10-day trip. We’d be thrilled to have people come for the conference and/or workshops! And proposals from Council members are most welcome, although I’m not sure if there is an overlap between your meetings and the first day of the workshops on Tuesday or not. Of course, you can book wherever you like. As I believe I mentioned, options near the university and downtown are limited, but if people have cars there are more possibilities. The shuttle between Guelph and Toronto airport is rather pricey (about $CAD100 each way, though just an additional $20 per person if multiple people are travelling together, I think) so a rental car may be more economical. I’ve been trying to get the block at Day’s Inn since December after our initial exchange; hopefully we’ll get something soon, in which case I’ll forward it on. However, what they were offering wasn’t much different from the standard rate, so I’m not sure it will be worth waiting. In the meantime, the Delta codes are below. They rather confusingly have room blocks separated out for the different events, with different rates. The TEI group block has a limited number of rooms. If anyone finds that they are unable to book under this code or can’t get the options they want, please let me know and I’ll see if they are willing to release additional rooms. I don't think we need to prioritize actually housing us all together: we're more used to finding our own spaces individually or in small groups. I think an hour's walk is likely also to be a bit much for the group—unless there's transit to shorten the commute to THINC. I think most of us have booked maybe at most 20-minutes walk from the Council meeting venue. Maybe worth mentioning: We *do* tend to meet over long days—say, starting at 9 or 9:30am, breaking for lunch at like 1pm, and then working as late as 5:30 or even 6pm, then exploring around for dinner. Is it okay for us to take over the THINC lab for those unstructured lengths of time? I think after all the *togetherness* of a long Council day, we don't necessarily *need* to be all staying in the same place...though hotel discounts are definitely likely to help us all with making our arrangements! It’s now time to set a regular meeting time in our calendar that works for all of us in the multiple timezones represented by our 2023 Council. Based on input from most of you, I’m using When2Meet to help set our new schedule. This When2Meet poll is based on the week of January 8 - 14, the second week of January. sometimes size does matter

I ran a time comparison of make clean validate html-web test exemplars from the released branch on 5 different machines. This was not a rigorous test, more of a semi-controlled casual comparison. The main failure for good control was that (in some cases) there were different error messages, because different systems fail to run certain things in different ways. But on quick check by eye, in no case was this a large contributing factor. (This could be rectified by doing it right, i.e. by doing it in the docker container on each machine. But several of these machines are too old or under-resourced to run docker. I will probably do the docker test on the 3 fastest of them some day.) The other control failure is that although I quit most other running programs (except, of course, Emacs, as I was running the build in Emacs, and did not check that it was the same version of Emacs), I did not check for running background daemons, etc. In any case, the results follow. Only the top one runs MacOS, all others run Ubuntu or Lubuntu. 2010 MacBook Air, Core 2 Duo @ 1.6 GHz: 28:17.1 Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e, Core M-5Y10c @ 2.0 GHz: 12:48.5 2013 MacBook Pro, Core i5-4258U @ 2.4 GHz: 8:04.5 i7-4790K @ 4.0 GHz: 4:09.7 i9-13900K @ 1.1 & 3.0 GHz: 1:30.6 (Note: The i9 seems to have some cores that run at ~1.1 GHz, and others that run at 3 GHz.) Thus the fastest machine is ~18.6 times faster than the slowest.

another freakin' inconsistency

I am writing here instead of on a Github ticket as this is either a Guidelines issue (if we decide to encode consistently) or a Stylesheets issue (if we decide to present consistently). Sigh. Right now there appear to be roughly 3700 apostrophes in P5.[1] Of those, 3490 are encoded with U+0027 and 241 with U+2019.[2,3] Of course, many of these are inside <egXML>, and thus maybe should be left alone; and some are inside comments (or maybe PIs), and we probably don’t care at all how they are encoded. So, refining the search to exclude those, there are only 2853 apostrophes,[4] of which 2689 are U+0027 and 190 are U+2019.[5,6] Those that are encoded as U+0027 show up as U+0027 in the HTML output of the Guidelines. I think that is a sin. The question is, what do we want to do about this? The following are (roughly) in my order of preference: 1. Change all the apostrophes to U+0027 in the encoded files, and change the Stylesheets to produce U+2019 on output. Update TCW20 or whatever to match. (I.e. to tell people to use U+0027, not U+2019.) 2. Leave the inconsistent encoding, and don’t bother to update the documentation, but change the Stylesheets so the output is more readable. 3. Change all the apostrophes to U+2019 in the encoded files and update documentation to match. (I.e. to tell people to use U+2019, not U+0027.) Also need to add some checks to the build process to prevent U+0027 from slipping in. 4. Change all the apostrophes to U+0027 in the encoded files, but do not change the Stylesheets, thus leaving our output ugly. 5. Oxygen plugin status

Hi All, Martina, Syd and I met this morning and made changes to the Oxygen plugin build to account for jar file changes in the latest Oxygen release. That seems to have worked, in that the bleeding-edge plugin built successfully on Jenkins, we were able to install it on both Oxygen 24.1 and 25, and it mostly works. The build of the stable plugin, which I ran manually on my Jenkins server, also seems to have been successful, but we haven't tested that. I say mostly because we found two different issues which are not directly related to the plugin, and which were broken in previous versions of it. One is that the ODD-to-PDF build fails with an out-of-memory error when transforming tei_all. It's possible that the Oxygen folks have kept it working in their version of the framework by adding additional memory to the transformation, but I can't see how they're doing that, if they are. Anyway, the same transformation works OK for tei_lite.odd, so I don't think this is a major issue. A more serious problem is that the epub transformation fails because a handful of CSS files are in the wrong place relative to how the transformation runs. If you look at the Makefile in the Stylesheets, you can see that it copies CSS files to a second location where the transformation is expecting to find them (a line added to the file by Sebastian in 2014). However, the framework/plugin does not use the Makefile, so that step never happens, and the build fails. The Oxygen folks have fixed this in their version of the framework by patching our XSLT to point to the files where they actually are. That seems sensible to me, and I think what we actually have is a bug in the Stylesheets, where relative paths are used to point to things and not resolved against a solid location, so running the same transformation in different ways expects to find the same files in two different places. The Makefile solution of making copies of them seems a bit like a hack to me. If you are subscribed to the bleeding-edge plugin, you should get updates, and if you make use of it over the next few days and have any problems, do raise an issue on the oxygen-tei repo. I think it would be prudent to fix the Stylesheets bug before the next TEI / Stylesheets release, because a new "stable" version of the plugin will be released at that time, but the bug has been there for a while so it's not crucial. There are still various pending PRs but we urge you to keep your hands away from the keyboard since we already entered freeze period (i.e. the real freeze, not the hot freeze!) Ummm … in dev branch without a PR, and without asking someone else to do the hard part. (That last is not a serious complaint, BTW … I realize you are working on a release and am happy to have some of the work off-loaded to me. I created a PR by pulling in the new p5subset.xml and "fixing“ the tests by simply copying from actual-results to expected results where necessary. So the intellectual task is to check whether these changes (to the expected-results in the PR) are indeed expected or whether they reveal some issues. How would you be doing the task of updating p5subset.xml?

Oxygen plugin update

Hi all, It turns out that we can't just adopt the new framework files provided by Radu. What we need to do is to compare each feature/transformation in the three current framework files with the new framework files, and figure out how to update each of our configurations based on the Oxygen ones; I'm really not sure what that will involve, and I don't have time to do it now, so I think it's time for Council to step in on this ticket: <https://github.com/TEIC/oxygen-tei/issues/27> I'm going to tentatively schedule some time next Friday to look at this if no-one else is interested, but until then I won't really be able to work on it, so be aware that if you update to Oxygen 25 and you're subscribed to the stable or bleeding-edge plugin, things may break. We might want to warn users too through TEI-L. I thought we had managed to convince the Oxygen team that we really need plenty of warning when they're going to release a new version that will break things for us, but they don't seem to have got the message. It's not really in their interest, of course -- our plugin enables people to keep using old Oxygen versions and still have up-to-date TEI and Stylesheets, so I can see how that might not be something they're too keen on. But we also have mutual interests that are not being properly tended; it makes no sense for Oxygen to release a new version with baked-in TEI 4.4.0 when we're just a couple of weeks away from releasing 4.5.0. I think it would help if Council had a more formal relationship with the Oxygen team and held regular coordination meetings.
