Dear Council, dear Lou, as we discussed at the F2F, I prepared a Google Spreadsheet containing 10 element specifications in different languages (see tabs) to test if Google Translator would be usable for an initial step in the translation process. My colleague and I commented on the German results and would ask you to add your own comments wherever possible, as we agreed on in Prague. @Lou: may I ask you to have a look at the French translations? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iVPMNGXj7p_XUAHW34LJsr6_owVSAq8bdDW… For the German translations: In the last Translatathon session we used Google translator for the specific example descriptions and we progressed very quickly. I think the descriptions are pretty good, most of them are comprehensible, although sometimes I would have picked another wording. The glosses are good as well, but sometimes too abbreviated. Most of the remarks are pretty good for a machine translation. Problems arise where technical TEI vocabulary (TEI-Header) is also translated, and complex German sentence structures are not always resolved correctly (especially when the remarks contains encoding). Overall, we found that using Google translator certainly cuts down time needed for translations significantly. We are planning to meet again (on Google Hangouts -- will someone volunteer to set up the Hangout, please?) at 14:00Z, i.e., in ~15 mins. The only things (I know of) for the agenda are: 1) trying to work out the rest of the ODD processing table[1], which IIRC Martin & I were supposed to work on prior to the call, but we didn't get to; and 2) tackling a ticket. Martin & I chatted and thought that ticket #206 might be something that we could handle as a group in < 1 hour.[2] Also worth mentioning that I mentioned the goal of a complete re-write to MSMcQ, who pointed me to an article by Joel Spolsky.[3] (Joel is one of the guys who started both Trello and StackOverflow; he is *very* smart, and I think usually right on target. It is certainly worth reading.) I can't join you either, as I'm currently winding an ODD workshop here in Paris... more than 15 minutes notice might have been helpful I tend to agree with James' comment below. Another good idea would be to address inconsistently/incorrectly specified actions as per MSM's recent tickets ... I'll be in a meeting for the first part of it so will try to join you later if someone reminds me of the hangout url. Joel''s warning about starting from scratch is good. Another approach is slowly and systematically updating portions of the code in place. Eg in our case moving some of the recursively called templates into functions or similar. AFAIK we are good to go for our next session tomorrow, Tue 12-20 at 17:00Z. That's 09:00 in Vancouver, 12:00 in New York, 17:00 in London, and 18:00 in Vienna. Anyone volunteer to establish the Google Hangout and send out the URL? (I have trouble with Google on this machine, so would prefer not to do that myself.)

As a reminder to all, http://www.tei-c.org/Board/procedures.xml#body.1_div.8 outlines what can be claimed per diem for the meeting last week, that is, for the meeting and associated travel, not for extra days. The public day meeting counts, because that was a TEI outreach event. The US DoS per diem rate for Prague is $136, per https://aoprals.state.gov/web920/per_diem_action.asp?MenuHide=1&PostCode=10… That seems high to me, as Prague seemed cheaper than Vienna, but maybe the State Department stays in nicer hotels. I dunno. So we are eligible to claim 70% of that, which is $95.20. Incidentals: Morning: $4.76 (5%) Afternoon: $6.66 (7%) Evening: $7.62 (8%) Meals: Breakfast: $19.04 (20%) Lunch: $26.65 (28%) Dinner: $30.46 (32%) You should obviously not request reimbursement for meals paid for by someone else, so when Syd picked up the check, he will just submit that for reimbursement. I know some of you were (as I was) caught up in various weather-related delays and cancellations. Expenses incurred as the result of these count as travel expenses, as far as I'm concerned, and are reimbursable. I had to take the train from NYC to Durham, and I'm submitting that ticket (coach class; I did upgrade myself to business class, and I'm not asking for the upgrade cost back). All the best, Hugh
