Fwd: Customizations provided by the TEI Consortium, TEISimple
Could the Council put together a response to this? I'm happy to
forward, or someone could write to him directly. If you'd like me to
adjust any of the wording at
http://www.tei-c.org/Guidelines/Customization/ adjusted, I can do that too.

I think the party line is that currently no official customisations are planned but that the existence of simplePrint leaves open the possibilities of things like simpleLetters and simpleMSS or similar if people wish to create them using a similar processing model. The council may or may not choose to focus on improving the output/transformations of simplePrint. But that's just my opinion. -James On 30/01/17 18:13, Kevin Hawkins wrote:

To: info@tei-c.org Dear Sir or Madam,
At the end of 2016 under “Customizations provided by the TEI Consortium” the “TEI simplePrint: An entry-level customization, focused primarily on the needs of those encoding Western European early modern printed material” was added to the existing list (http://www.tei-c.org/Guidelines/Customization/).
In the article, /Mueller, Martin; Rahtz, Sebastian; Zillig, Brian Pytlik; Cummings, James; Turska, Magdalena (2015): TEI Simple: An Introduction. A tour of TEI Simple from an encoding perspective. Online at https://htmlpreview.github.io/?https://github.com/TEIC/TEI-Simple/blob/maste..., 8.2015, 18.01.2017/, it is mentioned, that “TEI Simple targets the area of Letters in the broad and old-fashioned sense of that term. Its choice of elements reflects the practices followed in the encoding of large-scale archives, notably the archives produced by the Text Creation Partnership, but also the German Text Archive and a variety of archives encoded according to Level 4 of the Best Practices for TEI in Libraries. It is simple only with regard to its <text> element.”
For that I would like to ask:
Will there be any further “Customizations provided by the TEI Consortium” concerning the “TEI Simple”, including e. g. manuscripts and letters, in the near future?
Yours faithfully,
Joachim Laczny

Mr. Laczyny wrote to me directly to say he hasn't heard from anyone and asked me to forward the question again. I'm unclear if what James wrote below is the party line, his opinion, or a bit of both, so I'm reluctant to forward as is. How would Council like to proceed? On 2/3/17 3:09 PM, James Cummings wrote:

We discussed this in Prague. The consensus was that there is work to be done on the Processing Model, and that this is where we should focus our energies in the near term. We know there is interest in developing customizations focused on manuscripts and maybe on EpiDoc, and we fully support that, but Council won't be taking the lead. Sent from my phone.

All right, I'll send this in reply: The Technical Council met earlier this week and discussed your question. The chair explained to me that the Council plans to focus its effort in the near term on developing the processing model found in TEI simplePrint rather than creating other customizations. So while they recognize that there is interest among some members of the TEI community in developing entry-level customizations for manuscripts, epigraphy, etc, and while the Council fully supports the efforts of others to do so, at this time they don't plan to carry out any of this work themselves.
