Hi all, I've set up a poll at http://doodle.com/2qzywq8c379atu87 in the window April 13–May 15. Let's see what we can do, and I'll adjust as needed.
Lou asks in a comment on the poll whether we should assume this is
happening in the US. We'd said that since we're going to try to have the
Fall meeting in conjunction with the annual meeting in Lyon, we'd aim for
the US.
I personally don't care that much about venue. For me, actually, College
Park would be ideal because I can drive there :-). Oxford's nice, because I
can stay with family. Boston is a pretty easy flight. I don't know about
Ann Arbour—I've only ever flown into Detroit on my way somewhere else.
Suggestions for venues are most welcome!

I've never been to College Park, so I'm neutral there, but I've been to Ann Arbor a few times and it's lovely. I'd vote for that. I liked Duke too, but it was a longer trip and it would be hard on Hugh to have two in a row. We could put Victoria on the list, but booking a room around the time of DHSI (which is actually running for three weeks this year) would be tricky; we might end up in a hotel downtown or something. And it would be very expensive and time-consuming from the travel point of view. Cheers, Martin On 15-01-30 10:54 AM, Hugh Cayless wrote:

If it's simply preference, I'd always opt for Oxford, since it is very easy to get to (much easier, in fact than *anywhere* in the U.S.!), I know it well enough to navigate in my sleep, have friends there, and if the timing is fortuitous, I can combine a trip there with something else, e.g. the TATHS AGM during the first week of May. Have we written off Talinn? Or is that still looming as an option? pfs On Fri, Jan 30, 2015, at 13:54, Hugh Cayless wrote:

Still haven't heard back about the date range, but it looks like Boston is a real option for early May, and likely for late April, too.
I think it’s fair to have one meeting in the US and one in Europe. That said, the location should be convenient to reach without too many stopovers for the most of us. And, I’d be more than happy to host a meeting in Germany for you. Paderborn is a little bit far off, but I could probably arrange for a meeting at the Academy in Mainz, which is in close distance to Frankfurt airport (FRA). Just let me know … Best Peter

It depends on your notions of "fairness" really. I note only that we have currently 7 members of council based in Europe, 3 in N America (East), and 1 in N America (West). I cannot speak for all my European colleagues, but in my case a trip to the US adds at least one and more usually 2 days of travel to the meeting time , and costs (depending, obviously) anything from 50 to 100% more than travelling in Europe. We probably need another doodle for the location when the date is fixed?!

It seems that we should think about two meetings in Europe, then, if economics and convenience are the primary drivers. That's OK with me; I have a longish trip wherever the meetings are. The main concern then would be that the TEI starts to seem even more like a European organization than it does already. Cheers, Martin

It's actually 6-5, isn't it? Still, point taken. I'm not much bothered by location. But my calendar's already filling up... Sent from my phone.

Personally I don't have any real preference about the location, but I
share the view that this alternation between US and EU in a sense
reflect a trait of TEI community. And for the costs, it is true that
for European is cheaper flying inside EU but only to the main
destinations (NYC can often be cheaper than Warsaw for instance) and
that you must also consider the costs of hotels and meals etc. That
said this all depends also on availability of hosts. And thinking to
Autumn meeting, are we sure Lyon can host us beyond the General
meeting days? Or shall we seek another host institution for Council
meeting?

Ah, sorry: counting has never been my strong point: I took my figures from the Council membership on the website, but I failed to notice that Raff had moved to Miff. EU: fabio, james, stefanie, peter, lou, stefan CA: martin US: hugh, raff, syd, paul Anyway, let's try to get a firm offer for at least one of our meetings *somewhere*, in the near future! my diary is also filling up...
