Dear all, at present, I can’t access Roma (I may enter the first pages but Roma is unable to fetch module information etc.) and it seems the eXist-db is down. Looking in the logs at /var/www/vhosts/tei-c.org/opencms_tomcat/lv1/local/tomcat_6.0.14_teicms/webapps/exist/WEB-INF/logs/exist.log states: 2016-02-08 07:01:18,941 [main] INFO (BrokerPool.java [shutdown]:1495) - shutdown complete ! 2016-02-08 07:23:49,589 [http-8040-9] INFO (XQueryServlet.java [init]:135) - form-encoding = UTF-8 2016-02-08 07:23:49,590 [http-8040-9] INFO (XQueryServlet.java [init]:139) - container-encoding = UTF-8 2016-02-08 07:23:49,590 [http-8040-9] INFO (XQueryServlet.java [init]:143) - encoding = UTF-8 2016-02-08 07:23:49,631 [http-8040-9] WARN (Descriptor.java [<init>]:96) - Giving up unable to read descriptor file from /descriptor.xml 2016-02-08 07:23:49,631 [http-8040-9] WARN (Descriptor.java [<init>]:115) - Giving up unable to read descriptor.xml file from classloader in package org.exist.http So, it looks as if the db was shutdown and failed to restart. This sounds like something that will need to involve our sysadmin, Ian Rifkin. I'm copying him on this reply. Ian, if you go to http://www.tei-c.org/Roma/ , choose any option, and then click the "Modules" tab, you'll get an error. Kevin On 2/8/16 7:03 AM, Peter Stadler wrote:

Hi, When you say, "it looks as if the db was shutdown and failed to restart" -- what DB are you referring? I don't know all that much about the TEI code. The MySQL instance on the server is fine (you can see other sites like http://adho.org/ which read from that DB load fine). Is there another DB involved? I don't know if this is useful, but taking a quick look at things I think that the code is complaining that http://www.tei-c.org/Query/modules.xql?lang=en is returning a 400 status code. Is that related to what you're referring? When did it last work? Did anything change? I'll try restarting Tomcat just in case that helps… Ian On Mon, Feb 8, 2016 at 9:41 AM, Kevin Hawkins < kevin.s.hawkins@ultraslavonic.info> wrote:

Restarting Tomcat seemed to have fixed it…any ideas to prevent the issue
from re-occurring or at least ideas for getting alerted that it's broken??

Basically what's happening is there's an XML database, eXist, that serves
as Roma's backend. I don't know the details of how eXist is set up on that
server, but usually it either runs standalone on its own port using an
embedded Jetty instance or as a webapp under Tomcat or something similar. I
assume that since it came back when you restarted Tomcat that it's the
latter. There should then be an eXist endpoint running under Tomcat, and so
there should be a page we could hit to check that it's up and running. Is
there any other monitoring in place?
I'd have to go look at the setup to see if it's accessible on the web or
only to other processes running on the same machine. Does anyone on Council
know any details about Roma's setup?

Well, I have been looking at TEI’s eXist-db a little bit and can try to add it to my uptimeRobot. FWIW, there is already an issue on me to update eXist (https://github.com/TEIC/TEI/issues/527) Sorry for the delay … Peter
