I do not want to create any problem, if the majority of Council and Board is happy with this system let's go on with it. I do not think the video is a must, although it helps the interaction especially for non native English speakers, and some resource sharing facilities can make the meetings more productive. Only I would like to have the chance to use the conf system from the net, since in many occasion one member can be in the situation of not having any wired phone at hand. Just for background: there are multiple reasons we use the current economy conference call system. When the Board and Council were investigating this we tried various things but had all the usual problems with systems that sounded like there was a gale blowing down the line, or people not muting themselves etc. Personally I prefer google hangouts (multiple video conference 'just works' ... once people set it up right) to skype, but we've tried various options. These are getting better all the time. The actual cost of one of the conference calls to the TEI using this system is minimal, and it generally works, has a good range of international numbers, and there is also support.

If we did decide to open the can of worms that is investigating conference calling systems again, then we should do it on board-council list since they would presumably want to use the same system.

Just to note: I'm not saying we shouldn't reinvestigate alternative forms of teleconferencing... I agree for example that seeing video / sharing screens can be quite useful sometimes... Just that getting something that works for everyone in all kinds of situations (wired, wifi, at home, at work, at conferences, reliability, operating systems, etc.) can be problematic, and also that if we do re-examine this that we should do it on board-council because (in considering paid options especially) iit would be better to do it for the consortium as a whole. While I like google hangouts for multiple video chat this is probably because I have google apps domain that my extended family uses. I have yet to experience the immediate and seamless tele-presence from any supplier, never mind 3D holographic or not, that the media of my childhood promised we'd have by now.
