Council— Here’s oXygen Support’s response to my question of yesterday: This is pretty serious because it should be affecting Mac and Windows. I think I didn’t see the problem on my PC because I installed that plugin on it in December. (I needed to catch up my Mac last week and noticed it. The issue *could* be confined to the US. See below: I guess I had better file this as a ticket—on the TEI repo, right? Or is this a Stylesheets ticket to do with how we’re releasing plugins? Elisa

I am seeing a problem with my Mac OS X installation of oXygen XML editor build 18.1. I cannot install the latest TEI P5 Framework update from http://www.tei-c.org/release/oxygen/updateSite.oxygen http://www.tei-c.org/release/oxygen/updateSite.oxygen , and the error indicates a “handshake-failure.” The TEI update site from www.tei-c.org http://www.tei-c.org/ links to sourceforge.net. sourceforge.net is enforcing SSL security measures that are not supported by default by Java 8 (Java actually supports them but explicitly limits the support due to US cryptography export laws). This is what leads to the "handshake-failure" error on all platforms, not just Mac OS X.
* I have successfully updated the plugin on my Windows installation of oXygen 18.1. The problem seems confined to my Mac installation. Not sure why it would succeeded on Windows for you. I obtain the issue on all platforms, including Windows. Perhaps you have used a different source for the plugin and didn't notice. * I asked a friend on with a Mac installation of oXygen to update his TEI framework plugin, and he did NOT see a problem. Again, probably a different source for the plugin.
The only way I have found to avoid this is to download and deploy the Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction Policy Files for the Java 8 runtime used by Oxygen. You can find the JCE files here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jce8-download-213316... http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jce8-download-213316... The two jars found there should be placed (replacing the existing files) in: - Oxygen/jre/lib/security - Windows/Linux - Oxygen/.install4j/jre.bundle/Contents/Home/jre/lib/security - Mac
Directories starting with . are invisible in "Finder", so you may have to use the Terminal. e.g open -a Finder /Applications/Oxygen\ XML\ Editor/.install4j/jre.bundle/Contents/Home/jre/lib/security
Please let us know if you need additional assistance.
Regards, Adrian

PS: I’ve attempted uninstalling and reinstalling oXygen and I’m running the version released on January 31. Also, the network I’m connected to doesn’t seem to matter—I’ve tested this at my university campus and at my home on different networks. I’ve set I’ve also been following the troubleshooting guidance in the oXygen manual in adjusting Preferences (automatically accept security certificates even if invalid). In fact, I’ve got *everything* checked under Network Connections —> HTTP(S)/WebDav, and I’ve been testing this all over on multiple network connections, to no avail.
I’ve stopped short of attempting to make the JRE accept a new security certificate because the plugin isn’t running from https anyway. And I *am* able to update the “bleeding-edge” TEI plugin from our development source at uvic: http://teijenkins.hcmc.uvic.ca/job/oxygen-tei-bleeding/lastSuccessfulBuild/a... http://teijenkins.hcmc.uvic.ca/job/oxygen-tei-bleeding/lastSuccessfulBuild/a... THAT installation works. But the stable framework plugin update will not “shake hands” with me.
Thanks for any help. Elisa

Can you help to figure out what is wrong? In case it’s useful to consult in person, I’m a member of the TEI Technical Council and will be attending the XML Prague Conference next week. (I’ll be in Prague actually very soon for the TEI Council’s Face-to-Face meetings over this weekend and into next week, and this Mac is the machine I’ll be using there.) I’m hoping to have the plugin installed for the TEI meeting!
Please see the attached screen capture to document the problem.
Many thanks, Elisa Beshero-Bondar
I had this problem before updating to the current (just re
alized 1/31) oXygen and it persists with the new updated version as well. -- Elisa Beshero-Bondar, PhD Director, Center for the Digital Text | Associate Professor of English University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg | Humanities Division 150 Finoli Drive Greensburg, PA 15601 USA E-mail: ebb8@pitt.edu mailto:ebb8@pitt.edu Development site: http://newtfire.org http://newtfire.org/
