      I think the problem is caused by the fact that there's a problem 
character in the pw for eXist in the config file, which causes the 
script to stop reading it half-way through. I'm trying to figure out a 
way to escape it.

Sorry, don't know what's going wrong exactly but I configured the
exist-update-script to pick up the credentials from
~/etc/tei-exist.conf on the tei server.
