Hi, I'm not aware of any recommendations and therefore in the Cambridge project we introduced an ad-hoc element with specific attributes. In my opinion, this is one of the cases where we ought to push for the introduction of a new element in the TEI schema. I can explain the ratio behind our choice in more detail, if you are interested.

I use <space type="binding-hole"/>. I am not sure what the current recommendation in major projects (e.g. DHARMA).
