DHARMA Encoding Guide for Critical Editions

Dear colleagues, I am very happy to share the first release version of the DHARMA project’s Encoding Guide for Critical Editions. https://hal.science/hal-04085137 Abstract — The DHARMA Encoding Guide for Critical Editions is a set of guidelines for creating critical editions of premodern South and Southeast Asian texts written in Sanskrit and/or in vernacular languages heavily impacted by the Sanskrit tradition. Specifically, this Encoding Guide concerns digital editions in XML format compliant with the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) standard. These guidelines have been developed in the context of the ERC-funded project DHARMA, but it is hoped that they will help to establish new standards in South and Southeast Asian philology also beyond the DHARMA project. It would really be wonderful if we could get feedback from this forum, and equally wonderful if any of you could be found willing to set up any new text edition projects in compliance with our encoding model, which — I emphasize — could be modified in order to address needs of the community that we haven’t thought of so far or that we have dealt with insatisfactorily. So far, we have been able to test our model only on texts transmitted in Java and Bali and most examples come from such editing projects. I am hopeful that some Sanskritists can be found willing to join the bandwagon. Best wishes, Arlo

Dear colleagues, Say we have declared three witnesses P Q and R and we are facing a scenario whereby the accepted reading is in one case the result of scribal correction in the witness. Say that the display I desire is like this: vijayaḥ Ppc Q ◇ vajayaḥ Pac vajayo R How do I get there? I am surprised to find no guidance in the TEI guidelines. I have imagined the following two encoding approaches. What do you think? Dear all, I was wondering if anybody on the list has ever used the element <samplingDecl> and, if so, for which purposes. By reading the TEI guidelines (here<https://tei-c.org/release/doc/tei-p5-doc/en/html/ref-samplingDecl.html>), it seems that this should only be used when creating a corpus or a collection of texts, adding together pieces of a source or different sources. My doubt is: could it be used to record free-text information about the inclusion or the omission of portions of a text, manuscripts, or witnesses that are not editorial? For instance, can it be a good place to report that, for a given stretch of text, a given witness will not be collated (whether because the witness is incomplete or damaged)? Or should this kind of info rather be stated somewhere else (e.g. in <sourceDesc>, or <editorialDecl>)? Thanks in advance and best regards, Giulia Buriola

question about use of @source in stanza + paraphrase translation dyads

Dear colleagues, Two of us at DHARMA are preparing a digital edition of the Sārasamuccaya, a compendium of Sanskrit stanzas with Old Javanese parapphase. Regarding my use of @source, let me explain that in most cases, as in the first example shown here, the content of @source is a passage in a Sanskrit text which transmits the same stanza — as in this example, it is generally the Mahābhārata. I am making use of the loci as they are represented in the GRETIL file, and will use simple prefixes like MBh to establish proper links at a later stage. In the second case, the contents is a bibliographic source (here Indische Sprüche vol. I), in other words it is not itself a ‘text’. The presence of bibl: is meant to help distinguish between the two types of cases. Now to the specific problem on which I need your help: the correspondence with the reading of the @source is often not precise. In other words, even though a relationship with the @source is affirmed, we do not affirm that the reading of @source is identical to that of our text. In fact, I’d like to have a means of encoding that the correspondence is precise, which is rare, and maybe also that the correspondence is remote, which is also rare — the remoter the correspondence, the less likely that I’d want to cite the include a reference to the that source at all. Searching transliterated Indic texts in TEI

Dear All, in the near future, we in the DHARMA project will be looking into making our epigraphic corpus searchable. Our texts in Sanskrit and other S and SE Asian languages will be marked up in TEI (EpiDoc) and will be Romanised, mostly according to ISO-15919 but with some quirks on top of that, including a few extra characters and case sensitivity. We will not be lemmatising the corpus at short notice, nor is it likely that we'll add <w> tags, though we may do so for part of the corpus later on. We're interested in extracting transliterated text from TEI XML (sometimes including alternative strings in <choice>) and searching it as fruitfully as possible. Ideally, we should have two search methods, a lenient one to gather fuzzy results and tolerate e.g. variations in epigraphic spelling without returning too many false positives (at the moment we only have some rudimentary notes for the specifics of this), and a strict one to return the exact string searched for. I myself do not have the level of technical preparedness even to understand our options, and will be passing any suggestions on to people with the necessary expertise. But to get started, I would welcome some basic suggestions and pointers: any already working open source specialised code we should check out? Any general search solutions that may be adapted to our purposes? Many thanks and apologies for the vague question, Dan

variant line-start-hyphen-like-long-mātrā

Here's an interesting alternate form: End of line "sādhayāmi maha": [image: image.png] Beginning of next line: [image: image.png] The reading should be "sādhayāmi mahārasaṃ|| 97". It looks as if the scribe here has failed to make the "ha" at the end of the first line dīrgha, so he's compensated at the start of the next line with that avagraha-like sign. Is it meant to be a "2", for "2-mātras" maybe? Has anyone else seen this scribal usage? Best, Dominik

Devanagari hyphen

I've got some manuscripts that use a line-ending filler, a bit like the Roman-script hyphen. In one case, I think it explains a false reading in an apograph. My B witness (pṛṣṭhamātra but undated) reads [image: image.png] That's yasya with a line-filling character that looks like a daṇḍa. But it isn't a daṇḍa. The nearest thing I can call it is a scribe's hyphen. The line below, pra- is the same. The full word is pra-bhākaraḥ. It wouldn't be right to transcribe as daṇḍa. But more to the point, I want to record that this Devanāgarī "hyphen" suggests that the reading yasyā in witness U is a crux showing U to be an apograph of B. I've inserted an explanatory <note> into the transcription of B at this point: yasya|<note anchored="true" type="comment on reading">This end-of-line daṇḍa may show that the yasyā reading in U proves U to be an apograph.</note><lb/> But there must be a better way of expressing all this. encoding/transcribing the bhale symbol

Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has been encoding/transcribing the bhale symbol, and how you represent it. It doesn't seem to have made it into Unicode yet. As a follow-up to that, I was wondering if it was possible to set up a section of IndicTexts TEIWiki to document encoding/transcribing practices in current and past projects. I've thought a few times about putting together a document that just lists the different ways people have transcribed pṛṣṭhamātrās, virāmas, etc. that isn't covered in any specification.
